Default whitetail=7 mag?

What is the proper way to shoot a larger caliber like to sight it in?How loud is it compaired to the '06? I'm not recoil sensitive but I am for muzzleblast. I know it's more than what I need but I'm looking for a new longer range rifle.

I like big guns.

Sight in the same as any rifle, good solid rest, range target and hearing protection(earmuffs will cut the sound better than plugs in most cases). Louder than 06, more a UUUUFFF vs Bang, imo. It also seems to linger a bit, not as sharp...roar maybe. Again anytime you sight in your rifle you should have hearing protection.

Is this what your asking?

In the field i hardly notice the sound of any gun I am shooting, to much focus.

I am at 2" high 100, zero about 230 and 4' low at 300, this way i can hold on the deer out to 300. I shoot 150 gr Nosler BT or 154Gr Hornady SST.

Thanks skeeter,

Just to clarify my question for anyone else, I was asking if there was any special way you target shoot with a larger bore rifle? I always wear ear protection at the range, but when I'm hunting about how loud is it compaired to the 30/06? and also to say...I like big guns.

I also let it cool, I never shoot more than 5 shot groups, but most often 3 shot groups. I also like to take a couple of guns to practice with, seem to help aid in the cool down portion.

Like I said it is louder than an 06' but I really don't find intolerable while in the field. Range is moot since I use the muffs.

Now just go buy one and have some fun...lol.

Actually the 7mm is a smaller bore than the 30-06 but it provides more velocity.I find the two very similar as two muzzle blast and recoil as most 7mm mags have a slightly longer barrel and a slightly heavier barrel contour which adds a little weight.

I just started using a 7 mag this year and totally love it. The recoil isnt that bad. Ive shot over 50 rounds since i bought it this summer. As far as the sound, it does have a thump to it, most people can tell its no small bore when it goes off in the woods. Ive killed two bucks so far and definetly noticed the diffrent in knockdown power over the 30-30 ive used for years.
