If having a finer quality rifle is worth the extra money to you, save and buy such a rifle. Otherwise there's the NEF's, good shooeters but lacking any class.

With the thread title being "best 243", I would say Blaser, Anshultz, or Steyr, but being that you can't spend over $1000 on a gun, I would buy a good clean used Remington 700, Winchester 70, or Ruger M77. Another option is to go the Thompson Encore route and piece a gun together as you get the money. I have had Encores in 243, and they are hard to beat for accuracy. I am personally not a fan of "cheap" new guns. There are too many used guns on the market to settle for cheap. This is the right time of the year to be looking for a used gun. Good luck with your search.

I have a Remington 700 in 243 and a Tikka T3 Stainless in 243. Both shoot great. Just remember to top off your rifle of choice with a good set of optics.

Just bought one of these in a .243. Ruger M77 Compact - stainless / laminate.

It is a great gun, and shoots really nice. I paid 579.00 + tax. You can order it through walmart for about 540.00 + tax. It weighs just under 6 pounds. If the price is a bit much, it also comes in a blued / walnut.

There are other nice Ruger models available that are a little cheaper and not as compact either.

But I would wait and save my cash for a new gun of my choice.

Get the Savage if that's all the money you have- but move up to the .270. Hardly no recoil difference & more thumping cartridges. You won't regret it.

Tis' true PaJack. I have one in 7mm-08 that I have been hunting with for about 15 years. I wanted the .243 in the Model 7 stainless / Laminate , but they have quit making the Model 7 in stainless / laminate and they are very hard to find in like new cond. So I got the Ruger shown above, and it has turned out to be a great gun. But I do believe the Model 7 to be da bomb.
