well i am gonna make my first perchase for a bolt action hunting rifle.
i have yet to decide whether i want it in .300 WinM or .338 WinM.
300 ammo i have found it in bulk at cabelas, have yet to find 338 ammo in bulk thou so i am leaning to the 300 more.
i am gonna purchase one of those Knoxx stocks to soak up the recoil of these beasts, i'm a small guy and i am not fond of recoil.
now these stocks come in several forms to fit different manuf.
the ones i am looking into are...
Remington 700 BDL
Ruger 77MKII
Weatherby Vanguard
now the rem. and weath. are a little more in price then the ruger but not much from where i am purchasing the guns.
my question is what brand name would you go with AND WHY?
thanks for the resposes and happy holidays to all

They're all good guns so since you've essentially eliminated the fit issue by putting the same stock on each of them, I'm not sure it matters. The Remmy and the Vanguard are likely to be more accurate out of the box, but not always.
Those are big cartridges so if you're going after big bears or hunt in big bear country maybe the controlled-round feed on the Ruger action may offer a slight advantage, but even that is debatable.
I would go With Weatherby, because thayare accurate and very reliable, why are you going to buy a .300 Win Mag, or .338 Win Mag, on your first rifle purchase? You should wait until you are more experienced, but, do as you wish.
All of the three that you mentioned are good rifles and within the same price range from what I can gather. Nothing wrong with the BDL or the Vanguard but you can get the M77 in the new Hawkeye edition which has the improved trigger in a stainless synthetic. Personally I would go with the .300 Mag because ballistically I don't see that much of an advantage if any for the .338 Mag.

More energy, bigger, heavier bullets, has better energy at extended ranges, no, the .338 Win Mag, has no advantages at all.

Ok, so the .338 Mag has a lot more foot pounds of energy at exteneded ranges traveling much slower I will give you that but does it offer any real advantage over a .300 Mag that is already way more then sufficient? Think about how much more the round will drop compared to the .300 at 500 yards? Not like he or she isgoing to shoot that far anyway...

M77, you got me, I own both, and in all honesty, they both do great on large game. I love both calibers, too.

Most outfitters request .338 for a minimum if you are going to hunt high. Grizz's love horse meat!

And you got me there! I would want the biggest cannon I could find because hunting Grizzlies is a whole another story! Actually, if I were stalking Grizzly or big brownies then I would want that along with .45 side arm and a couple of good friends with either semi-auto's or 10 gauge shotguns. Yeah, I don't mess around with Grizzly's, no sir. He or she didn't mention Grizzlies, they just said bears but if I'm walking around in that part of town then you're right, it wouldn't hurt to have a .300 as the bear minimum along with a guide and maybe a friend who are carrying as well.
I think the side arm would be to put myself out my misery [8D]
I honestly don't believe you will be happy with either caliber for a 1st rifle because of excessive recoil, weight, muzzle report, barrel length, ammo cost, etc. With something like a .270,.280,or 30-06 you can make 95% of game shots on north american continent with a LOT more user friendly rifle. PLEASE do yourself a BIG favor and consider one of these cartridges.
