Default Help me to decide 7mm or 300wm...

Well, I've spent more hours than I care to admit reading old posts. However, I'm still somewhat unsure of which caliber to choose. I've hunted all my life with a 30.06 and my trusty 30-30. I've killed more Deer with my 06 than I can remember. I'm at the point in my life where I'm financialy able to experience more exotic hunting trips. Myhunting buddies and I are planning a few trips in the upcoming years. I plan to hunt Elk, Mule Deer, Moose and maybe large Canadian Whitetail. Which caliber will accomplish the deed ? What do you reccomend , why ? Your responses are greatly appreciated.
By the way, the trust Winchesterm70 has already harvested Caribou at 252 yds in Canada.

Unless you just want a new gun I think you may already have the perfect gun.

I've killed animals up to and including elk with a .300 Wby Mag, a 7mm Wby Mag and a .270 Wby Mag. All died fast and no tracking was needed. None, as far as I can tell, knew the difference in what hit them. In fact, all the longest shots were made with the .270 version, including a devastating kill on a 5pt bull elk at 275 yards.

In my experience, .300 mags hurt when I shoot them, and most 7mms don't (except for the RUM and such). Between your choices, I'd go with a 7mm mag just because it has noticeably less recoil than .300 mags of comparable case size. You will shoot more accurately, and that will make a big difference in performance.

But, like Doe Dumper says, you really aren't going to see a great deal of increased performance from either one over your trusty .30-'06.

neither, Use what you have and take the money you would have spent on a new gun and buy some good equiipment, like boots and clothes maybe a range finder... etc.

There is nothing wrong with buying a .300 Win Mag, and already haveing a 30-06, the .300 Win Mag, will shoot flatter, and hit harder. But, I would step up to the .338 Win Mag, if I just wanted a bigger beast.

Put some of your $ on bullets that shoot well in your 06 and use the rest to book hunts.

It sounds like you're in favor of the .30 calibers but kicking around the idea of trying something new. Am I rightBill?Either are more then capable but stick with the .300 Mag

Although the 7 Mag and the 30/06 have about the same recoil level; the .300 Mag is whole plateau above these two. Have you shot .30 Magnums? If not, you might want to test drive one. And after that, you might want to get a 7 Rem Mag. Great long range caliber.
