WD-40 is penetrating oil? Is it safe-yes. Is it a good idea? NO. Dust and particles stick to it, and will gum up. This happens after it penetrates into areas that you do not want it to. Tom.

wd-40 wont touch any of my guns...though theres alot of people that swear by the stuff. although its a real fluidy liquid it tends to gum up quickly...definently rather use an oil like Break Free than wd-40...in a pinch i guess wd-40 wouldnt HURT..i wouldnt use much and would try my best to whipe it all off..i never leave alot of oil on any part of my weapons. dirt and grim stick to oil and oil gets thicker when its colder..good way to ruin a shot of a lifetime!!
statjunk...i dont think its a degreaser...its more of a GREASER lol...its a petrolioum product i do believe..its a penetrating oil i believe...not 100% sure...

WD40 is a water displacer and penitration oil. It was originally designed as a water displacer though.
It makes a poor lubricant to be honest. Like said above it doesn't last long and actually gums up after a while. There are much better lubes on the market than WD-40.

I worked on Bank Vaults,Bank Safes, Commercial Locks, Residential Locks,Automotive locksand Penitentiary Locks for 35yrs and Never, Never used WD-40. I used TriFlo! WD-40 will gum up and accumulate dust and grit in small moving parts.
If I had to wash out and Ignition Lock without removing it, I would use the thinnest oil, Lighter Fluid.

Never use WD-40 as a gun oil, because, as mentioned, it gums up very quickly, and trust me, you don't want any of that in your action, also, real gun oil tends to prevent rust better, and not collect as much dust as WD-40.

Why certainly! It is sure safe enough! However, I found that if the stuff gets into mechanisms, such as a trigger system, that it tends to build up over time and become gummy.
I know of several instances in which police departments were using WD-40 as a rust preventative on their revolvers. Over time, it penetrated into their ammo that was in the cylinders, and either killed the primers or the powder, as the contaminated rounds would not fire.
For pure rust prevention, I prefer Birchwood-Caset SHEATH. It doesn't gum up the works! For pure anti-friction lubrication, I prefer BREAK-FREE CLP.

I'm also with the Break Free crowd... I've used it for many many years now from hot climates to waaaaay below zero F, and it never gums up or gets sticky. It's great stuff!
