Default PORTED?

What is ported?

I have a 1895 guide gun in 45-70 Marlin.

not exzactly 100% but i know its holes in the side of the barrel. believe they are to release gas and help cut back on recoil...

The ports are angled up and to the rear to counteract recoil. The gas jets push the muzzle forward and down. The downside is that the report is now directed at your ears. The noise level is increased dramatically. Wear your ear plugs. I guy I know had the same gun in .444. He had it rebarreled without the ports because he couldn't stand the noise.
