HI , im wondering if yall heard any good news own the .257wby mag cause im thinking about getting one for next years deer season?, have any yall shot this caliber before?
This is one of the best long range deer/antelope/caribou calibers ever devised. 100 grain bullets can normally be driven to 3600 fps. Barrel life isn't real great, as you might expect. Maybe 1,200 rounds. Brass is expensive too. And for big game, you need to use a fairly tough bullet. One of the most popular is the Nosler Partition. The new 110 Accubond has, so far, shown itself to be tough enough for the high impact velocities of this caliber. We got a couple of elk last season with this bullet and it stayed together - it one instance, even after breaking a shoulder first.

What do I think of it? Well... knowing it has relatively short barrell life, expensive/not readily available ammo, and fairly light bullet, as much powder stuffed in it as a 7mag... I don't get the appeal for deer hunting... what does it do on deer than, say, a .270?
Having owned almost all of the quarters bores, I feel that the 25-06 all things considered is the way to go in that caliber. It will do everything the 257 W. will do and do it cheaper by far.
The 257 WBY is simply Fabulous. Its about the flatest shooting caliber ever made. I think it more then worth for the gain you get over the 25-06 and if you reload you can really make this a beast. GO For it!!!
200-300fps faster is always worth the $ IMO>

Yes. I have used it. It is great for anything beyond 300 yards! I regard it as way too destructive for shooting deer at any range less than 300 yards if you are looking for something to eat! Like ol' Elmer Keith used to say, "You want more meat than what you can wipe off the bullet! If you are trophy hunting, it doesn't matter, so it is good for such purposes. Very flat shooting and accurate.
IF you do decide to use one for deer, use a 120 grain bullet, and get the toughest ones you can find! Here's where Barnes solid copper bullets are really the best!
(Roy Weatherby claimed you could kill a Cape Buffalo with a shot in his butt with an 87-grain bullet from this rifle - this is something I would NOT try!)
