Default rifle question

I am looking for a new rifle. I need it for deer hunting mostly but I also want a rifle that is big enough for moose and elk hunting. I want a fairly flat shooting. I was thinking of a .270 and a .264 mag the only thing is I want a pump action and I don't know if I can get a .264 mag in pump action. What are your thoughts on these to guns and what other rifles would you choose. 18 birthday present and I want I gun I can go just about anywhere with.

If you want something you can go anywhere with, you are definitely better off with a .270 than a .264 Mag... You'll be able to get .270 ammo just about anywhere. It's pretty much as common as finding .30-06 ammo. The .264 Win Mag is going to be a little harder to find if you happen to need some from a local mom & pop store because you dropped the box you brought in a puddle when you were unloading your truck...

The .264 also has recoil and noise penalties, without a lot of real, effective improvement over the .270's performance. Assuming you're not overly sensitive to recoil, I'd recommend the .270, .30-06, .308, or 7mm-08.

Action type isa personal preference issue. I'd rather have a bolt action than a pump. I've never seen a pump action rifle that was aesthetically pleasing, and you'll get better accuracy from a bolt gun.

Yea, I have to agree with ipsc. The .270 is a dominating rifle. So many ammo choices. So many rifle model choices as well. The .270 is amazing anywhere between 50m and 250m. An ultimate caliber; you CAN NOT go wrong with the .270. However, the 30-06 is my absolute favorite, but the .270 is a very close second!

Ive got anmid 70'srem 760 in 308,, they make the 7600 in 308. Very light on recoil, fast follow up shots. Will kill anything from deer, black bear to moose. Its got a free floated barrel just like a bolt action and is very accurate out too 300 yards. dont let anyone tell you these guns arent accurate,, MOA and MOR (minute of ribs) is 2 different things!

I would say this is the most popular weapon in Ontario for hunting deer and moose, hands down!

Only downside too this gun is the forearm rattles a little bit when walking.. Can easily be solved by holding the slide bars.. If you already use a pump shotgun, id definitely get this rifle!

The 270 will do the job but I really think you would be better off stepping up to 30 caliber.

I'm not the first one to say it, and probably not even the millionth - if you want a gun that you can do anything with, buy a 30.06!

You are not going to be able to find a pump action .264 Mag.
