Default New Rifle!

I bought a close-out Reminton 700 synthetic ADL in .30-06. After the $25 customer appreciation coupon at Sport's Authority, I paid $304.47. I can't buy an action for that.

I really didn't need it; I already have a .30-06, but I couldn't pass up the good deal. I am already thinking about my next rifle project.....

A .280 Improved? Maybe a .35 Whelen? Decisions, decisions.....

a 280 improved would be quite awesome, make up some 160 grain nosler partition loads that would be a devistating combo would make a heck of moose or elk gun.

338-06 AI SIMPLY because you have an abundant choice of bullets for reloading vs the 35.... but then again the 280 AI is wickedly awesome and hell, Nosler even has Reloading data for it in their book But i wouldn't sneeze at the 35 Whelen AI...

building your own rifle, if you have the tools and the talent, is very gratifying... especially with results like these...

The 280 AI is a hot number that I believe is better than the 7MM Rem. Mag. At this particular time you can get correctly headstamped brass from Nosler as this year the Nosler custom rifle is chambered in 280 AI. This round is a favorite of Kenny Jerret and of Bob Nosler. Since you can get quality brass this eliminates the hassle of fire-forming new brass. I would much prefer a 280 AI of a 7 Mag. I use the standard 280 Rem. in a custom barreled model 700. I get over 3100 fps with 140 gr. CTBT's and I've reached 2950 fps with IMR7828 and the 160 gr. Partition. I believe the 280 to be a good thing and the AI version toonly be better.

I had a .35 whelen and it is a great cartridge especially when you hand load your own. I recently traded for a 300 win mag

I already have a .338-06. I had that one built in '97, and it performs famously. With the Kreiger barrel, I can get one-hole 3-shot groups at 100 yards, and I have shot groups under an inch at 200 yards. I have to do my part, of course, but the rifle is plenty capable. I have gotten my best accuracy with 200-grain Balistic Tips and 250-grain Grand Slams. I am hoping to find a load for the 225-grain Accubonds. I haven't played with them much.

I really want a .375 H&H, but I found this rifle cheap, so I might postpone my .375 H&H plans. I think a .280 Improved would be a dynamite sheep & mtn goat caliber. I can get the machinist to shave off a little wieght on the action, fluted barrel, lightweight stock, compact scope....

Thanks for the tip on .280 AI brass, Superpig. I might start buying a bunch now. Who knows how long it will be available?

Wow Rootsy
I never thought the 35 whelen would make such a good woodchuk gun. I have one in a Rem. 7600 and with factory ammo it is just a moose, bear and deer gun.

my 280 Rem with 100 gr Hornady HP's tend to just cut woodchucks, literally, in two.... i can't imagine what this thing would do... small nuclear detonation maybe?
