I'd say .300 Win Mag or 7mm Rem mag, but if you also want to hunt varmits, get a 7mm-08, but make sure your shot placement is good when you go moose hunting.
If no varmits are in your interest, get a .300 Win. Mag., or a 7mm Rem. Mag.

Excellent choice. .30-06 is pretty universally considered the best "all-around" cartridge for North American game, particularly if Polar, Brown and Grizzly Bears aren't in the equation. Others to look at: .270, .280, .308, 7mm-08.

Bolt Action by Remington, Savage, Winchester, or Browningand the best 3-9x scope you can afford and you're good to go.

For all around big game hunting, you cant go wrong with an 30-06. Especially if it is your first rifle. I personally shoot a .270 and wouldnt be afraid to shoot at any big game with it, but then again I have been shooting that caliber for years and it is my families caliber of choice. The .06 has a very wide selection of shells and there is sure to be one that fits your needs for just about anything you do. Now if you are going to try and shoot varmits too with your big game rifle, maybe the .270 would better fit your needs, they are said to be a bit flatter shooting and probably wouldnt blow up a small animal as badly as an .06 would.

Your 30-06 oppinin would be a fine choice for deer, bear, moose. I wouldnt reccomend starting with anything smaller than the .308. Tuk101's suggestions seemed pretty reasonable to me. I dont suggest the 7mm-08 for bear or moose although good bullet placement would sure enough put one down, i would suggest either your 30-06, 7mm Mag, 300 mag, or even the 308. If your looking for a manufacture for your rifle, im not sure its possible to beat savage for their money,
