Default Whats the best way to sight in a gun? Having problems sighting in new gun.

I bought a very nice Winchester Model 670 in .270 caliber. I put a Bushnell Sportsman 3X9 scope on it with the high scope rings so that I can still use the open sights. I am having a very hard time getting the gun to shoot consistant groups. I mean, one shot will be 3 inches high and to the2 to theleftand the next shot will be aninch low and to the 3 to the right. I am shooting 130 grain Winchester Power Point rounds at 75 yards and using a Site and Clean gun rest to keep steady before I squeeze the trigger. I took this scope off from my 223 which I had sited in pretty well with no problems and the scope is only about a year old now. I have been shooting for nearly 30 years now and am a pretty descent shot so this is baffling me.

MM300, your on a roll tonight[&:]. Can't see what point your post has..out with a bang mentality I suppose[&o].

TUK101, loose the see thru mounts they are weak and known for such occurances. Also they mount the scope very high causing many to loose a good check weld and ulitmately hindering their shooting ability. Either you need a scope or don't. As far as the site and clean rest try sandbags instead, I tried a buddies and it was anything but STEADY from my perspective. Try another load in comparison.

Good Luck

MM, Again, I am very sorry about the loss of your friend, but you have no reason to take it out on folks here.

I think this is supposed to be a site for HELPING people out and enjoying others that have similar interests to us.

I still don't see what point your post has?
Must have come from another debate you had with this poster!

Maybe that is how MM has racked up 500+ posts in a month. I have never claimed to be a gun expert. I am an experienced gun enthusiest at the very most. I will try a couple of sand bags and see if that helps any. If that doesnt then I will loose the scope and rings. Thanks for your help and if anybody has any other tips keep them coming.

Before loosing anything , try remounting the whole thing. Make sure your rings are in alignment and not torquing the scope tube. Also I agree with getting rid of the see thru mounts, they are weaker and do hinder the ability to shoot a rifle well. Also does the rifle seem to wander with the open sights as well, if so look into the bedding of the stock.

I have tried sighting in with my Site and Clean gun rest, and was also rather inconsistent. I think it is sturdy enough, but I also think the shape and positioning ofit makes consistent cheek-to-stock placement difficult. Definitely try the sand bags before changing anything.
