Default reduced barrel weight

I was just wondering if anyone knows about how much weight you would lose by cutting off about two inches of barrel on a gun like the rem. 700 (looks to be a little thicker barrel than some other). I'm looking for a 30-06 in a wood stock that would be around 7 lbs. even. Thanks for any help.

I recently restocked an oldMark V Weatherby with a regular McMillan fiberglass stock. Reduced the weight by 4 oz. There are other stocks, like the McMillan Hunter Edge, thatare even lighter. I might look at this before I would shorten the barrel - particularly if the barrel is already only 22".

Yeah, I would'nt cut the barrel down just to remove some weight. Personally, I dont think it would be enough to justify loosing appx 75-100 fps. There are some simple things like using a lighter weight scope, scope rings and even hollowing out the butt stock and like Roskoe mentioned replacing the stock for a light weight synthetic.

When it's all said and done it's going to take a fairly light weight rifle to begin with to come up with a rifle/scope combination that's going to weigh 7 lbs.

I disagree with the ballistics portion of the two previous posts. Cutting 2 inches from your barrel will not save that much weight, but your ballistics will not suffer 75-100 fps for each inch you remove. Check the attached link.

http://www.loadammo.com/Topics/October05.htm

how will 50 fps affect your ballistics at 500 yards? not much. at least not enough for me to notice.

PS Remingtion 700 CDLs are nice. If you want to get below 7 pounds with a wooden stock look at Brownings, or give up on the wood and go to a composite stock.

I wasn't talking about the scope included, i was just looking at the rifle. The cdl's were what I was looking at, but I would prefer a 22 in. barrel, not just for weight but when doing drives and stuff for a little bit shorter rifle (I have a win. 70 push action now with a 24 in. barrel).

What about a 700 mountain DM?

I bought a 700 CDL in 243 a few years ago and i can't say anthing bad about it other than it is a factory rifle.
