has anyone tried these on whitetails and what kind of damage does it do ..I hunt swamps and might try some .im not concerned about meat damage i just want big open holes ..massive hemmorageing..

A very good friend of mine uses them whenever he can find them in the stores. He has taken several deer out to 250yds with those bullets and has them drop in their tracks every time. The only draw back I see is the amount of drop those shells have at longer distances. Try the 165's...they pack a punch and don't drop as much.

They're still .308 caliber. I'm not sure how they would cause bigger holes or cause more massive hemmoraging than a 150 or 180 grain bullet, either of which packs plenty of punch for through and through penetration of a whitetail.

I shoot the winchester 150gr power points and they do some damage. Winchester ballistic silver tips i heard do more damage but I have ner tried them. Try the power points though you wont be sorry...

If you want maximum penetration so that you will have exit wounds,Try the barnes tsx.

If you use the 220 grain RN 30-06 and hit a bone of any size, you will have the mess that you want. Lots of blood and destroyed meat.

I would just use a Non Premium 150 grain bullet. I have shot a ton of deer with that combo.

I've seen 3006 220's used, and on deer they don't expand as fast as a lighter bullet, so do less damage... A 165 grain will kill deer better than a 220 because it does more damage by expanding faster, yet in most cases on deer it will penetrate quitewell...

I never even liked 220's on moose, because the 200 grain out perform them in many ways...

Normally that may be true and I suspect that it is. However I have had the misfortune of hitting larger bones at pretty close range with 220 grain RN 30-06's I can tell you that there is nothing much left within a foot or more of where the bullet hits. When I was a young guy a fellow that I guided gave me several boxes of 220 grain 30-06 shells. They were in an unmarked carboard box and I don't know who made them but they just raised hell with anything they hit. Being young and poor I used them for a while until I started reloading.

That said, your lower SD bullets, all other things equal will expand more readily than heavier bullets. The best factory load for me has been the Federal Blue Box 150 grain shells loaded with Speer Grand Slams. The expand well, do enough damage but not excessive damage IME.

One time i got my dad up on a big cow caribou. It was faceing and slightly above us. Dad put a 220 RN right about where the neck meets the body, the caribou dropped on the spot. When i skinned it out there was a huge hole where that bullet only went in about 6" and blew up like a bomb!!!

That was the LAST time i ever used one, as they just don't do anything that something else can't do a hundreds times better...

As far as I'm concerned there's no good use at all for the 220 Grain round nose cup and core bullet in the 30 calibers. If one really needs that big a bullet he should get a bonded 200 grain or Woodleigh makes a bonded 240 grain bullet.

For hunting deer the 180 will do anything the 220 RN does and better.
