Default .257 Weatherby Mag.

Hi all,Got a chance to get a .257 weatherby Mag. Deluxe at a pretty good price .Question is how much better ,or if you prefer faster is the .257 than the 25-06 ?Is it enough to warrant getting one.Probally going to get the rifle anyway 'cause it's so purdy.Just curious about the round........Thanks Alton

They are from 100-200 PFS faster than the 25-06. However in the field, having owned both, there is little practical difference in performance. Ammo cost is much higher for the Weatherby as well. Barrel life is better for the 25-06. Both are good antelope and deer cartridges and work well for long range large varmit rifles. I would opt for the 25-06.

If the rifle has a 26" barrel,it will offer about 200fpsmore than a 25-06.If the rifle only has a 24" barrel that advantage drops off to the point where I wouldn't bother with the 257wby at all.

I agree. The .257 Wby needs a long tube to burn its charge. I like the .25-05 Ackley Improved better than either the regular .25-06 or the .257 Wby. Good performance - even in a 24" barrel, much better barrel life than the Weatherby, andinexpensive brass.

at closer ranges, bullet performance is not necessarily predictable with the weatherby. the ultra high velocity may cause problems with projectile expansion. but if you're trying to reach out and tag at long range, it's the king of the .25's .

The Lazzeroni 257 scramjet offers even more velocity as do wildcats such as the 257stw.
