Default Steel shot??

I have an older Win 12G that has served well for turkey and dove. . . just moved up to Colorado from Texas and want to get out for some Geese this fall. . . .I was told that I can't shoot steel shot through this non chrome barrel?!*$

So. . .if the shot is leaving the barrel inside a plastic sleave. . .why not?

Not that I need much of an excuse to buy another gun but. . .

If I were you I would spend a little more money anduse the new high density non-toxic shot and forget about steel shot. I hunt with a 10 guage and I find steel shot is barely adequate for geese. I am not sure if high density non-toxic shot like Tungsten and Bismuth can be used in your shotgun. While the shot made from these metals is similar in density to lead it may not be as soft and deformable as lead.

Thanks. . .I check those out on my next visit to Sportmans. . . .

Gearing up for Elk first. . . . .this should be quite a change from the dog sized Texas White tail I been shooting for the past few years.

Steel doesn't compress like lead and can damage a full choke...

ive heard this too that steel shot shouldnt be shot from the older guns apparently theres good reason but i just dont see it... a buddy of mine has a real old winchester mod 12 his grandpa bought when he was a teenager in the 1920's. its my friends only shotgun he uses it for everything including waterfowl and he shoots steel through it and has been for quite some time now and has never had any sort of a problem.

I"™ve been told that there is some barrels that can handle steel but I wouldn"™t take that chance. The gun smith that worked on my barrel had samples of barrel ends that showed what happens and the end result was a barrel splitting open towards the end. Not a pretty sight. While the gunsmith had my barrel I also got my forcing cone extended. This also helps in having the shot squeeze thru the barrel from the chamber...
