Default remove the paint from my barrell

I was recently given an old Remington Wingmaster. The guy that gave it to me spray painted the entire gun olive green to hide the shine. I want to restore the original look to it. I can strip the stock and pump and restain it I'm sure, but what about the metal? What can I do to remove the paint from the barrel and breach without ruining the metal?

I'm not sure if paint stripper will harm the blueing under the paint. Being that the blueing is a chemical reaction to the metal it should not remove it. But if you want to try, I would suggest trying it on a small spot on the barrel, under the forearm where it wouldn't be noticable. If it doesn't work you can always retouch up the blueing. If it does remove the bluing and you still want the paint removed you can strip it all and take it to a gunsmith to have it reblued.

Acetone (sp.) should work.

I'd suggest a equal mix of Acetone and Denatured Alcohol.
Like said, try it on a small spot. It may need to sit a while to start to soften then dissolve the paint. Don't use and abbrasives though, just a soft synthetic sponge or rag to wipe.

If that doesn't work you may try adding 1 part M.E.K
And use PLENTY of ventilation with that mix, or better work outside and/or with a chem mask, But that will take just about anything off short of using an actual paint stripper.

Carb cleaner will likely remove almost any type of paint, not the epoxy type tho. It also won't hurt the blueing, but you will need to relube any springs as they will rust fast...

Success! Between advice from this forum and guys atthe firehousemy old wingmaster looks new again. Mineral spirits, a rag, and elbow grease took the spray paint off the barrell and reciever. I stripped the stock and pump arm with a paint/finish stripper and used linseed oil and a clear coat on the wood. She's gorgeous. Now to work on my aim...
