Default Shot change point of aim

I finally confirmed it this weekend after shooting my rifle for 6 weekends in a row. As soon as I get to the range the rifle is shooting under 1" at 100 yards on 2 to 3 shots. Then it will continue to shoot about an 1" but in another location, approx. 2-3" away. After about 5-7 shots it will just move all around. This is shooting factory ammo in a Ruger MII in 300WM with floated barrel and a timney trigger. It has been pretty hot on most weekends that I've gone to the range.

Is this the barrel heating up? Or is it something else?

Tom

It could either be the barrel heating up, fouling, or you are getting tired.

If the groups are staying relatively consistent in size but moving around the paper it is very unlikely that is due to a hot barrel...Increasing heat in the barrel generally tends produce a linear pattern away from the original POI of the first few shots....

Could be moving around in the stock, barrel. Got same problem with a 300win mag rem 700 I have now. I tightened up the action screws to 45inch pounds and set the trigger down to 2.5lbs. Well see.

That is generallytrue if the problem is bedding related. However,if there are stresses in the barrel itself, the point of impact can float around as the barrel heats up and coolsbetween groups.

Every time I go to the range it will shoot right whereaim. So essentially after some long period and with a cleaning the accuracy returns. I've let it cool an hour between firings with cleaning and still the same pattern emerged. A few weeks ago I tried the clean and two shots and clean and two shots etc... The rifle didn't react to it at all. It did exactly what I described above.

I really don't think that I'm getting tired because this past weekend. I went immediately to shooting the 300 before shooting anything else.

Any ideas?

Well, what happens if you keep the barrel fouled and don't clean it and shoot it on differenet days? Or clean after each shot?

Knowing where your gun shoots cold bore shots is important. But usually its fouling, not temp that affects POI. I got a browning A-bolt, that I know for a fact will shoot 1" high and 1.5" to the right on a cold bore, it always has and always will most likely.

BC,

I'm going to test both of those over the next several weeks. Luckly I'm reloading now.
