Default Shotgun Setup

I have a 12 ga pump with a rifled slug barrel that came with it, bought as a combo set. The reciever is tapped for a scope and I was thinking of putting a red dot or something in that order. This slug gun will only be carried when I will be a driver on a deer drive. Will this set up be fast
or would a shotgun scope be better? My eyes are not as good as they use to be so I need something besides the iron sights. I will be shooting win
supreme sabot slugs and I will set this up dead on at a 100yrds.

For your specific uses, (driving in particular), I would recommend something along the lines of a Leupold VX-II 1-4x20.

For driving I would say as big as a piece of glass as you can get. You want a very quick acquisition [however it's spelled], so bigger the sight window the better.

Low power goes right along with that bigger glass.

Got some $$$? Look at the Holosight......if you see your target and a dot is on it.........

Personally, in that situation I would lookat using a large diameter red dot. Something with a 30mm tube probably. And no magnification, just a plain 30mm red dot "scope".

I would try looking at some fiber optic open sights and see what you think first. I think the open sights would work better in your situation. The fiber optics are pretty easy to see and would be faster than a red dot or a scope unless you practiced alot.

My main concern is that you have a combo gun with a drilled reciever (mossberg 500 would by first guess). This means you have a bird barrel and a rifled barrel that are interchangable. Reciever mounted optics do not work incredibly well on these types of weapons because the barrels are not fixed to the reciever. Chances are it will work pretty well, until you decide to use the other barrel and swap them. Then you will lose your zero and have to start all over again when you put that slug barrel back on.

A better option if you want to use some sort of optics is to save up a few bucks and get a Cantilever sope mount barrel. This well let you put a low powered scope or red dot on it, and then when you take the barrel off the optics come off with the barrel and it will hold it's zero.

What you want to do will work, as long as you don't intend on switching barrels back and forth and don't want to take the barrel off to clean it. Because once you pull that barrel and put it back on there is a good chance your point of impact will change. Maybe you will get lucky and it won't, but I sure as heck would check before you hunt with it again.

Good luck,
Paul

I agree with Paul on the use of open sights as a driver you will need to get on them fast as a driver you will have them up and moving. But even better if legal in your state a good buck shot load is best for a driver.
