Default Win. Model 70 Pre-'64 Barrel Question

I am looking for some input on a question. Hopefully someone can tell me. I inherited a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 from my grandfather. When he first purchased the gun in the '40's, he had the barrel changed to a shorter after market one for hutning in the Northeast. However, I live out west and use the gun for mule deer, antelope and elk. I would like to get a little longer barrel on it. Most of the barrels I find will require work on the stock to make it fit (carving wood out). I really do not want to do this. I recently found a barrel that looks identical to the one I currently have on there. The question I have is that the seller is telling me it is a POST-'64 barrel. Are these not compatible with eachother? Would I be able to use the post-'64 barrel to replace the pre-'64 one? I am no expert by any means, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some barrel makers off duplicators.....they will duplicate your barrel contour.....

I'd go for that service personally.

Look up douglas barrels or other barrel makers.

No matter what however there will be a tiny bit of stock work to make a new barrel fit.

If you ship that rifle to a barrel maker/gunsmith, make sure it is insured heavily. When addressing the package, tryto omit any use of language showing it is gonig to a barrel maker/gunsmith. UPS lost my fathers rifle, and I have been through a great deal of greif. If at all possible, drive the rifle to the barrel maker/gunsmith Good luck.

If I were you I think I'd try to find a good, competent gunsmith in your area and tell him exactly what you want. There are several custom barrel makers out there that he could order a new barrel from. I would think that there has to be a barrel maker out there that could duplicate the original contour, so that no stock work would be necessary.

The pre-64 model 70 is a special rifle, I own one myself. Let a competentgunsmith do thisthing right for you.

Although the threads on pre 64 and post 64 model 70's are the same (.995 X 16), the pre 64 has a cone shaped cut going into the chamber entrance and a majorextractor cut for the controlled feed extractor. The newer Winchester sportershave a flat cut coming off the back of the chamber. So they are not really interchangable - although a good gunsmith can make it work for around $75 or so.

Pre 64 is a cut rifled barrel. If it were mine I would replace it with such. This fellow builds a beautiful barrel and contours it to match factory, I am can also guarantee he has seen a pre64 or 3. good luck with your decision ....http://www.cutrifle.com/

Does anyone on here know if Numrich Arms carries original pre-64 barrels, or are the ones they offer off-brand? Might want to check it out..........
