Marlin 1895G

Does Marlin still manufacture the 1895G with the ported 18 1/2" barrel or was this disconntinued? Did the gun come standard without the ported barrel and this ported barrel was an option? Thanks.

Good question. I went to Marlins web-site. All they displayed was a 45/70 and did not mention any other caliburs. This 45/70 did not have a ported barrel. But I have seen 450s ported but don't know if they still make them. Barrel length was 18.5 inches. I think my son-in-law has a 44 mag 1895G. I thought they also came in 444 and 45 LC. But now, from their web-site,it looks like they are only made in 45/70. ???

Forgot to mention the caliber. It's the .45-70 ported barrel I was referring to.

According to the flier I have, the 1895G "Guide Gun" is specifically the 18.5" barrel in 45-70. It does not list the barrel as ported as I remember. I know it did come that way in previous years but they may have discontinued it this year.
The 1895 G is 4570, 1895M is the 450 marlin, then there a couple of other 1895 models also, mainly changes to stocks, finish and barrel length. Calibers are 45-70, 450 marlin, think they still make the 444, and I also beleive they have it in 44 Mag but I'm not sure.

I have a 1895m in 450 and it is not ported...Im pretty sure you have to get it ported yourself.. Why get it ported though.. My 450 is more powerful than the 45/70 and it is not bad to shoot at all... I kind of enjoy it actually....JMO

Just wondering if Marlin produced the 1895G with both ported and non-ported barrels in .45-70 govt.

Sorry, wasn't too clear in my post. The gun used to come ported, but I believe it no longer does. It is now up to you to get it done.

(and to someone else. 450 Marlin is nothing more than a belted 45-70, made so that you could get the performance of a hotter load without the ammo companies worrying about someone's old sharps blowing up in their face. If you handload, there is nothing that the 450 does that the 45-70 can't. Just another excuse to make you buy a new set of dies)

MAYBE SO, BUT IM NOT A HAND LOADER SOI HAD TO GET THE 450...

BUT YES...IF YOU ARE A HANDLOADER YOU CAN GET THE BALLISTICS OF A 450 IN A 45/70

(not made directly at you, which is why I didn't put it as a reply to your post)

Just pointing it out for others or those who don't know.
OK, or for those of us with aquirk forstating history and backround.
( I just hate how Marlin now talks about their "newer, better cartridge" but when it first came out they spoke of how it was just an adaptation of the 45-70 made different enough to protect against someone from putting a new, hot load in an old rifle)

Garrett makes some prettyhot rounds for the .45-70. Gotta love that 'ol round.
