Default Old timer seeing new ways fella's...

Just bought this new rifle and in investigating and researching guns I've been second guessing my current choice. Been using a 30-06 for years for mule deer and it now sounds as if technology has lapped it. I've never had a bad thing to say about my 006 but wouldn't mind shooting something with a little more pop! Not too much, just looking for opinions on what you fella's take out into the hills as "old reliable"? Thanks

Uhhh, so what is the new rifle you've bought.... that would help cut to the chase.

Anyway,

IMHO, the technology developments are really in bullets, not in cartridges or really in rifles.... there are only so many ways you can send a piece of metal hurtling down range. That said I am a believe in spacing out your cartridges rather than just having just little incremental differences leaving you with essentially the same thing as what you had, thus 300WinMag and 300WSM are too close to your 30-06.

Great round in the 30-06 BTW, moving up I would go to a "super 30" (i.e. 300 Weatherby, 300 RUM, [or even stronger]) or go to a 338 something (338WinMag or 338 RUM). My boys took up 338WinMags for elk when they were 19 and 155 pounds or soand have never looked back (moved up from a 270 and a 308 respectively).

Nice spacing: 30-06, 338WinMag, 375HH, and then 458 (or 416).
Not so nice spacing:308, 30-06, 300 WinMag.

So what did you buy?

Hey thanks for the take! It was a 30-30 Winchester bud. Shot one with grandpa years and years ago and it was a more of a "no more Winchester New Haven Factory" purchase more than anything!

I would look into a .300 Wby. Mag., or .300 RUM. Good luck.
