you're going moose hunting

Your rich uncle just tapped you on the shoulder and said that you're going moose hunting with him on a horseback trip to British Columbia. You should go to the local sporting goods store and get yourself a moose rifle and just charge it to him.

This is mountainous and the shots could easily make 300+ yards. The moose are very large and there's a few Grizzlies in the area but you don't have a permit to take one of them. You will ride by horse a few hours every day and then hunt on foot and use the horses to help evacuate the moose when you get him.

What rifle are you getting??????? Make, model and caliber...

7600 Remington 30-06. For me its simple. For Grizzly protection a pump is the only thing that would give me more than one shot. The 7600 is as accurate as most bolt guns. I have used them forever and have complete confidence in them. The only option would be the same gun in 35 Whelen.

This said, if I had to walk much, I would be in more trouble than grizzlies. I am afraid those days are past for me. However if I could ride, it would be ok. If not for the range you set, the 45-70 would be a no brainer pick for me. I probably will go moose hunting in Canada but it will be in Sask and will be from a boat.

The most expensive I can find if he is buying and willing. Probably another German made Weatherby Mark V to match my .270 wby mag I already have. Caliber .460 wby mag cause I like them. I would leave it behind and take my 70#Hoyt Trykon bow.

Well if my uncle is buying it I would get a Blaser R93 professional model in .375 H&H magnum for fast heavy hitting follow up shops. With the proper load this caliber will reach out and shoot flat to 300 yards. I would put a swarovski scope in at least a 3x9 power in a 30mm tube design. Of course the rifle would probably have to be ordered.

Like James B, I can't walk that far so would be better suited to a float trip style of hunt or ride horse back. 308 would be my caliber of choice in a savage rifle. However that would not hold off any grizzly bear. Not sure what I would take along.

I would decline the uncle's offer to buying a rifle for me. I would probably offer to buy him his choice of rifle just for the fact that he's offering me a moose hunt. I have several rifles in my stable that work work without a doubtbut the one that would go with me is a Sako M75 SS in 375 H&H topped off with a Zeiss 3x12x56.

As far as bears goes I would bring a couple of cans of pepper spray and either the 454 Casull or 480 Ruger in a Super Redhawk.

Some of us older guys who are onthe "back side" of 50 or 60 tend to cotton more to the float trips, but if you're gonna be horsin' and hoofin', more power to you.
As for the caliber, I use the .338 WinMag. Brand is up to your own preference, as long as it hits where you look. I killed a moose years ago with a.280 Rem, and it went down like a ton of bricks, but the .338 has been my "North Country" gun for a long time, now. If you're gonna be hunting among Griz, don't be undergunned.
