Default Issue Duty Guns-Military,Police,Federal

I thought it would be a good idea to start a post on what sidearms or other guns are issued to military, law enforcement and Federal agencys.
When choosing a gun you can see what they carry and use it as a reference since they spent a good buck on testing for it.

Syracuse Police - S&W .45 acp model 4546
Onondaga county Sheriff's - Glock model 21 .45 acp
NY State police - Glock 17 9 mm (I heard they are switching to Glock Model 22 .40 Cal)

FBI - Glock Model 22 or 23 .40 cal
US Marshals - Glock model 22 .40 Cal (I have seen them carrying custom 1911's also)

Army - Beretta 92 9 mm

Very fewagenciesspecify just 1 particular weapon/caliber. There's a short list of acceptable weapons and officers are allowed to choose what they feels works best for them.

Actually, after the North Hollywood incident, a lot of agencies thought it would be better to just choose one so people could interchange magazines. Agree or not, that's how it's been with a lot of agencies. Especially in Ca.

As for models? You could pick a popular model, and you can find an agency that uses it. The Military will be switching soon I've heard. The Ca. Highway Patrol will be switching soon to the sig. I've heard also. My own agency uses the S&W 5903. What a peice of crap. We've been using it for about 12 years. Probably the cheapest of the lot. We are supposed to be switching to the sig also. We'll see.

Point is, you can find out what firearm an agency uses, but you won't know if they like it. Just because an agency uses one, does not mean that it performs well.

It also depends on your own preference.
For example, a lot of people like Glocks. I'll never touch one again.

Montrose County CO SD = Glocks...I can't remember what model and cal., but do know that I'll NEVER own a Glock. Little brother just had his service weapon blow up in his face at the range. Serveral other members of the dept. have had similar experiences with their Glocks.
