Default 270's

I currently shoot an old 30-30 for deerhunting. I just got on a lease that has the potential for some long range shots. Looking into a new rifle and what I would like to know, what is the difference in recoil of the 270 vs. the 270 WSM. I've shot a 270 but not the WSM. I checked the charts of ballistics and the WSM performs better.

Basically the only advantage to the wsm is a lighter rifle. I have a .300wsm and it performs ballistically the same as a .300 win mag.The .300 wsmhas the advantage of the shorter action and lighter rifle. Recoil is the same. Personally I would just get a .270 instead of the .270wsm. Ammo is much more available and a way better selection of bullet weights in factory ammo. The .270 wsm did not sell well like the .300wsm or .325 wsm. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have both the 270 WSM and the 270 Win. I just wanted to try the Savage Accu-Trigger and a WSM so I combined the two. I got the 26 inch Heavy barreled Varmit Model. The recoil is a bit more with the WSM but if you don't have trouble with recoil with the regular 270, then the little extra of the WSM should not be a problem at all. As far as performance goes, the difference is not worth mentioning. I Plan to load the WSM to about the same velocity as the regular 270 because it has allof what it takesfor long range deer hunting.

If you purchase the 270 with a 24" barrel you will be giving up very little if anything to the WSM. The 270wsm will have faster recoil which in a very light gun(Kimber 8400 or Browning Abolt) could affect some shooters. I disagree with the poster that said the 270wsm wasn't selling well. I am betting it is the top seller or right next to the 300 wsm in spite of coming out a few years later.

I agree with OEH. The 270 WSM is selling very well in my area. That and the 300 WSM. The 7MM WSM however is about Nil in sales here.

I found the 270WSM to have noticable recoil with 150gr comparied to 270. This was mainly with slower powder. But definate notable improvment with velocity. You can get an extra 150fps with the WSM especially with factory loads. Alot of people can brush that off like its nothing, but folks thats almost the difference of a 300win mag and 30-06. Keep that in mind.

Basically, way I looked at it, you can getbullistics of a 130gr bullet with a 150gr bullet in a WSM. I knowsomepeople who get 3100fps with 130gr bullets in thier270win, but I nevercould reach that myself with accuracy.

Thanks for all the replies. After reading them all I think I will go with the regular 270. I live in a real small town and the availability of ammo is the deciding factor. In my small town there is only one place to purchase ammo. Actually haven't checked out to see what they do carry but do believe that the 270 will be plenty to down any of our whitetail down here in La. Again thnanks for all your opinions.

'dawg, another good thing about the .270 is that you can find 100gr factory ammo for it and use it for coyote and predator hunting. The 130 gr is the smallest factory ammo for the .270 wsm that I have seen. WAY more factory load options. here is a ballistic chart for you to look at. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ballistics/

270 Win will make a great step up in your locale for the game at hand, congrats on moving up from the 30-30.
Personally, I'drecommend the 30-06 over either, just in case you may want to "kick the ole hunting up a notch" someday.
