Default Gun Repair HIstory

Does any one have a link or able to let me know shere to find repair problems with cirtin models of guns. I was at the Kittery Trading post Tuesday trying to trade my 742 Woodsmaster for a new 7400. The manager told me he was not able to take and 742 Remmington Woodsmasters on trade because of their history with chamber problems. Now had I known about that problem I would never had bought them myself I have two of these guns and the reason I wanted to trade them was just for that reason they spend too much time at the Gun DR. So if there is a place to look up these problems we would know what not to get or be on the look out for.

I doubt Consumer reports would have anything to do with gunsUnfortunately today you have to look at a Manufacturers track record in the last few years and physically see the product and how it functions before you can buy. I go by feel and quality of workmanship and materials and haven't gone wrong but with a few exceptions.

Here's your best bet for such a list. I haven't logged in for over a year, so I'm not sure how extensive the notices are now.www.firearmsid.com/Recalls/login.htm

I don't think 742s ever were recalled for fucntioning problems, but most smiths will tell you they need to be clean to fuction 100%

Mike,

There is no directory for these kinds of issues. You simply have to do you homework before you even consider buying any gun.

For example, in this particular case I was not clear on what the specific problem was with model based on your brief description...In less than 2 minutes I was able to find numerous internet sources that clearly stated the apparently well known issues with this gun.

Here is one example...

Quote:
I would get your 742 to a good GunSmith ASAP! The new 7400 Remington came out due to 1 serious problem with the 742 rifles.( Sloppy Owners). The rifle will fire when out of battery.

This dangerous & possably deadly condition happens in most part to shooters, who don't keep their bolt and raceway area of their Recievers clean. Inthis case the bolt won't close & that is why they can fire (Out of Battery) an un-encased cartridge. That is as bad as it gets, & usaully results in a bad injury or death.
(Basically itis well known fact that these guns will fire out of battery.)

The easiest way to find to this typeof information is through the use of Google. In this caseall I had to do was to search "742 Remmington problems" to get the all the information I needed to prevent me from purchasing these guns.

Hope this helps...

JC

Thanks guys I will give it a try. Thats sceary fireing out of battery and all seems like there should have been a recall on that issue alone.

we are talking about Remington ..you know the same folks that came up with the recall on the 700 trigger and charged owners 20 bucks to send them in and get them fixed when they had multiple lawsuits pending.
