First of all im only 15 so i wont be getting any pistols any time soon(not till 21) I was wondering how horrible the recoil was from a .500 s&w. When i turn 21, go through all of the paper work, and get my permit i would like to get one for hunting game here in NY, and for out west if i could get a charter. Im sure i will have to beef up a bit, but if it is enough to break the strongest shooter's wrist then i will think of something smaller like a .44 mag.

They don't kick that hard at all. If you can handle a 44 mag you can handle a 500 S&W.
Thing about recoil on the 500 is that the gun itself weighs at least 3.5 pounds for the little 4" barrel version. One that you would want for hunting would weigh anywhere from 4.5 pounds on up to 5.2 pounds. Then add in the weight of the ammo and then add in the weight of the base, rings, and scope and you will easily have a 6 - 7 pound handgun.
And then it has a muzzle brake installed as well to reduce recoil even further. so it is extra important to wear hearing protection. You get the added blast from the muzzle brake in combination with the added blast of it just being a revolver.

I am honestly baffled why the need for pistoleros to use something bigger than the 44 maggie. I guess if you want the ultimate, you could locate a Howdah pistol! (Wait, might not be legal anymore.)
I am biased to the .44 Mag because well made ones, and relatively portable ones, can be had, and they don't drag your belt down to your knees. They are not pea shooters, either. I would have someone shoot a midbore like a 38 special before I put them on to a maggie. But what the heck, let the really big bore fans have a chance too on this one.

Why does anyone need a Ferarri, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, Saleen S7, etc...?
Why does anyone need a 300 RUM, 340 WBY mag, 416 Rigby, 470 Capstick, etc... when a 30-06 will kill anything that walks this planet?

What I want is for the manufacturers to hurry up and figure out a way they can afford to put all these big-boy magnum handgun loads in carbines.
To A. Hunter: for a first pistol I'd would absolutely recommend the .44 over the 500. Not because of recoil, but because if you can't take it with a .44mag you have no business going after it with a 500 (I'm not talking about cartridge capabilities so much as I am talking hunter's capabilities) AND....AND....the .44 is everywhere. Cheaper gun, cheaper cartridges, wider selection of factory bullets. Of course, in 6 years handguns may not even be made[]

Me too! I can't wait for a Marlin 1895 carbine to come out in .500 S&W.
However, if I was packing a pistol for defense against big bears; the .500 S&Wis a whole plateau above the .44 Magnum. It is at the performance level of a .50 caliber muzzleloader with 150 grain charges. Serious horsepower.

Ditto
need has nothing to do with it. I for one am not a anti-magnum guy like some people. I'm more of the bigger the better guy. I want a 500 S&W but my Project-X 300Rum and the new VLS 243 drained the gun fund for a couple months. But by deer season I will be packing the mighty 500 and the new 300rum If I was a deer I would be scared come november.
Hey roskoe, lets each write them a letter explaining our "grievances" and see who they send the test model to first!
Now I will agree, when teeth and claw are coming at you the 500 does come into its own.
(There's a couple wildcatters out there I'm sure...but that advantage will always go to the wildcats. Heck, I've not seen the gun, but I have a friend who uses a 45-70 revolver for deer with cast bullet handloads. He's not one to lie, and the gun fits the owner. I don't know many 6'6" 275lbs grandpas that are lean! )

Dang right. I am real tempted to shell out a few bucks for a handi rifle in 500 S&W but I would absolutely love a Marlin with an 18 or 20 inch barrel. That would be super sweet.
