Default fixed front sight

I was talking to a friend today who had removed the front sight on his rifle. He stated that they were simply soldered on and with a decent torch and MAP gas they can be removed. Would this be true for the Ithaca LSA65 and the Browning 81 BLR? Also what would be the proper method to quelch the barrel, oil or water?

I don't know about the Ithica but the BLR is just screwed on.

I took out the front blade and no screw, no screw anywhere on the front ramp? Leads me to believe they are soldered on.

In that case leave it alone. You will have to reblue the gun if you remove it unless you don't mind a really ugly muzzle.

Why would you have to remove a front sight?

If you do decide to remove it then just heat up the sight and not the barrel.

The BLR has to be reblued anyway and is currently stripped down for that job. The Ithaca is in pristene condition so I will leave that one alone. I dont like the front sights on a scoped rifle, never have so took em all off and blind screwed the holes. These are the 1st 2 rifles in 50 years that were not screwed on???? Thanks for the insights.

BUMP
Any input on unsoldering and quelching a heated barrel? I want to get this done prior to taking it to the Smith to blue.

Don't do anything to it. Just let it cool off.
