i was just wondering what would be a better gun for me the '06 or the 7mm mag. how does they recoil compare between the two and also i have shot a 340 wby. mag with a muzzle brake so would that compare to either of the two ?
I would lean toward the 30-06 but there is very little difference in recoil with simular bullet weights. You might also want to take a look at the 300 WSM. There would be a little jump in recoil but not much.
If you can, find some of these rifles that you can shoot before you buy. There is nothing like trying them yourself.

If you have a rifle range close by, I'm sure someone will let youshoot them and then compare for yourself.
The only way to learn how to castrate, is to cut B***S.

Neither one compares to the .340 Wby even with a break. I'd lean toward the versatility of the .30-'06. The 7mm is good but I'd never recommend it for big bears or AK moose while the old .30-'06 works well for both. At 16, who knows what you'll be up to in the future and the '06 will be good for any of it as long as you stay in North America.
thanks guys. just to let you know i hunt alberta so i will be hunting everything from elk, moose, deer, bear and sheep and i plan on hunting the yukon next year probably.
Definately the 30-06 then. It can handle the heavier bullets better than the 7mm, namely 180gr bullets, which is what you'd probably use for bear. I personally own both, and prefer the flatter trajectories and higher velocities of the 7mm, as well as its downrange energy, but the largest animals I hunt are elk, and I hunt in wide open county where 300 yard shots are pretty common.

My feelings exactly...I used look down on the 7mm as too much of a good thing (velocity) but have changed my mind in the last year or so. Both are good solid rounds. The 30-06 wins in versatility and the only thing it gives up is a slighlty flatter trajectory. Personally if its too far to take a shot at with a 30-06 I think you've got two choices: Learn to shoot or get closer!
