Default .17's

This weekend I hung out with some guys that both have .17 cals. They talked about how accurate they were, more than a few people there swore that they can consistently shoot the head out of a quarter at 200 yards. I wonder how true that is? I'm gonna shoot with them soon to see and if they indeed are that accurate i may buy one. Also I assume they might be alright for rabbits or squirrels but guess there wouldnt be much else besides target shooting. Anyone shoot .17s?

I have no use for one. If I want to hunt small game I will use a 22lr and if I want to hunt coyote or fox I will use my 223 or 243. In my mind they dont cut it for fox or coyotes. And most my small game is shot inside 50 yards so the 22lr works fine. I had a 17hmr for a while and it didnt cut it for me. Take that bad boy out on a windy day and try to hit a quarter at 200 yards good luck. I couldnt beileve the wind drift. That 17 grain bullet dont buck the wind for $hit.

My heavy barreled Savagebolt rifle will put 10 shots in an inch at 100 yards all day long. This is with a 3.5-12 x44 Simmons Aetec scope on it. If the trigger was better maybe better. The day I shot the groups it was windy too. I dont think they drift as much as people think at 200 yards.

I think they are getting carried away a little bit. They are pretty accurate, but I think that is pushing it. Not that it can't be done, but I don't think it could be done consistantly. The marlins and savages are very accurate out of box, often sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards for 3 shots. They tend to have fliers though and a realistic group is more like 1 inch. I would ask to see them do this before you believed it. I think they may be able to hit a quarter at 200 on a good day, but shoot the head out of one? If they can really do that they need to start competing, because they would do very well.

The 17 V-max sighted in at 100 yards is 8 inches low at 200 yards and has 15 inches of wind drift with a 10 mile an hour cross wind.

I get about 3/4-1 inch groups with my heavy barrel savage at 100 yards with a good 20 power scope out of a rest. If you want to know more about them go to rimfirecentral.com or varmint al's website.

I have a Savage heavy bbl with a RB trigger in it set at 12oz. On a calm day it will group 5 shots, at 100 yards that you could cover with a dime. I have also used it very successfully on raccoons, squirrels, possums, ground hogs, and 1 mangy fox. Stick to shots under 150 yards, and choose your shots wisely and it will work fine.
