You won't get 50% reduction. Something funny about recoil pads IMHO is that they don't change the 'amount' of recoil very much but they change the way it 'feels'. They certainly help though, they take the sting out of the kick. You can always try to make the gun heavier or try shooting lighter weight bullets...those will make a more noticeable difference (again... that just my honest opinion. Most of my recoil experiments have been with shotguns where there seems to be 1,001 ways to help recoil.)

I have been shooting a 30'06 with hot handloads since I was 14 years old and it never bothered me at all. A decent recoil pad will make it very manageable for even very little people. If you are a slight toaverage sized person....don't worry about the kick at all! Regards, Rick.

Get the Shooters friend recoil pad from Cabelas. They say it reduces felt recoil by 70 percent. I have used it. They are RIGHT. Its a slip on that I use at the range. In the field you probably won't be bothered by recoil from the 30-06. Some people say that the 30-06 does not kick that bad. That may be true for some and not for others. They say recoil is in the head but thats BUNK if it hurts your shoulder, nobody is going to convince you that it was in your head. Things in your head don't put bruises on your shoulder either. The 30-06 delievers a big blow to big game, it comes with a price and what is mild to one may be darn harsh to another. Yes its true that rifle fit and stuff makes a difference but a hot loaded 30-06 has 17-20 lbs of recoil and thats noticable. Try that recoil pad at the range. Its about 18.00 and you will like your rifle a lot better after a few shots with that on there. Look at the picture of it on the Cabelas webb site and you will start to see why it works. And its soft. If you try it, let me know what you think of it. Thanks

If you got 50% reduction, it would be half of the 18 or so foot-pounds an '06gives with no reduction- about 9-10 ft/lb., or about like a .243 or .257 Roberts. You'd get this much knocked off if you combined a good muzzle brake with a recoil pad like the Limbsaver.....

YEs - these work well - my kids have used in getting used to shotgun - single break Marlin that really pounds you and the pads worked great.

Also try a differnent load - 30'06 gioves you a great choice of rounds - try a 150 grain and this will take some of the kick out of the recoil.

When you put a recoil pad on a rifle it takes away the sharp kick and you feel more of a push. The muzzle jump and amount of energy created by the gases coming out of the barrel are the same. So if you're looking for something to compare it to I'd say a pump shotgun with 2 3/4" heavy field loads would feel about the same. But honestly, if you're just worried about get bruised up at the range and developing a flinch, just bunch up a t-shirt or a jacket and put it between your shoulder and the gun butt. It will do the same thing without adding bulk to your rifle, and like others have already mentioned, you don't notice recoil in hunting situations anyways.

This is a great question.... but I will tell you....

I have a Rem721 in a 30'06...old rifle with steel butt-plate. I also have a Win70 in a 325 WSM with a Pachmayr. The 325 is supposed to have a good deal more recoil, but these two rifles feel the same to me. Matter of fact, my 270WSM, also with a Pachmayr feels like my 325WSM....Those recoil pads really disperse the shock of the recoil.
