Depends on what you're hunting. For anything deer-sized are smaller the gun itself would be the determining factor, not the cartridge.

For a gun to carry while walking or for deer out to 150 yards, I would prefer the 30-30. For everything else, Give me the 30-06 7600 Remingtom. The same gun in 308 would suit me just as well.

Are you going to have only one gun? It would have to be a 30-06. If you can't afford a scope, the open sights are fine on those rifles that still put them on. It is by far ballistically superior to the 30-30.
I know the 30-30 has killed a bunch of deer and is very popular. But the ballistics, excuse the expression, suck. If you were to get a lever, you would be much better off with the 35 Rem. But of the 2 choices you offer, the '06 definately.

Must be a trick question.
30-06
Hands down, no question, absolutely, not even close, no comparison

This is not a trick question, but it is a repetitive one. He posted the same thing in the deer hunting section.

I don't think its a trick question either. For deer only if you want a light effective easy to carry deer rifle, you can't beat the Model 94 30-30. I have taken many deer out to 200 yards with the 30-30 never lost one that was hit.

Get both.
In my opinion, I would rather have a lever 30-30 if I am sitting in a tree in the woods. In the kind ofwoods I hunt, ballistics don't really mean much. Rule of thumb is.... just shoot the deer!I think probably the best gun for the money is a Marlin 336. A brand new one can be had for less than $400.00.

If i were to get a 30-06, I would get it in a good bolt action. If you did a little shopping, you could get two quality guns for less than $1000.00. Minus the scopes.

The great thing about both is ammo availablity. The 30-06 can be loaded light to very heavy. If the Lord doesn't return before then, these two cartridges should be around for another 100 years. In most cases, you will not be nailed with $30.00, or $40.00 for a box of shells with the two.

But, if you can only have one gun (curse the thought), the 30-06 wouldprobably be abetter choice.
