It truly depends on the recoil pad you purchase. Sims labs makes a recoil pad ($25-30.00)that is supposed to reduce felt recoil a lot ( can't remember the %). Make sure when the recoil pad is mounted it doesn't change the length of pull on your stock (Lop), have it checked before you have pad mounted this could be one of thereasons you are having problems with recoil, also bullet weight and powder loadings can increase recoil. Remington also makes Managed recoil shells for the 30/06. Last and more expensive is a muzzle brake ( I have one on a Rem. 700 ADL 30/06) tamesrecoil a lot but is very loud at the muzzle.

Try the shooters friend slip on Pad that Cabelas sells. They claim about 70 percent recoil reduction and I think its close to that. Its not a great looking pad but at the range, it takes out most all of the sting. Its a thick wide and very soft pad. Try one. I didn't believe any pad could do what it does but I am a believer now.

Personally never noticed that much recoil from a .30-06. But that is me!

I have tried the low recoil bullets by Remington and they make a noticable difference. The muzzle break does reduce recoil but I have a harder time with the increased noise than I did with the difference in recoil. Just a personal preference.

Like adamsdad said, try the Managed Recoil loads from Remington or the low-recoil option from Federal. I used the Managed Recoil .30-06 this year and the recoil is definitely almost 1/2 or the regular loads. The Remington loads are designed for shots up to 200 yards, so if you're not going to make long shots, you'll be OK.

Only place recoil is ever a problem for me is at the bench. I got one of those recoil pads you put on your shoulder and use it for all my guns when I am shooting from the bench. (combined with the R3 pad on my 700 andthe 30-06 recoil is nonexistant). Be surprised how much even a .308 and .44 mag can punch you when your all hunched forward at the bench. When I'm hunting it doesn't matter what the recoild is since your only going to be making one shot. The wearable recoil pad and using both earmuffs and earplugs on loud guns are the two best things I ever did to improve my accuracy in general.

Well, you probally have a couple options here, and you should probally weigh them out. 1st. you could go out and purchase a muzzlebreak for it, but then you would have to pay to get it installed as well. 2nd. you could purchase a recoil pad (which can range in quality and costs as well) 3rd. you can buy managed recoil roundsand they wont hurt your wallet as much either. It all depends...you could honestly combine some of the options too...it all depends on that you want out of your gun and what you feel like spending to do it.

my suggestion...I would try the managed recoil ammo first and see how they feel to ya. then work from there.good luck shootin buddy.

yeah i'll agree with that. i used to only shoot the 125 until i tried some 180's they really don't kick a whole lot. i do want to try some 165's that i have to see if i can get better accuracy.
