I know I wished I had the money in 1998 to buy some Browning Auto5's I missed the boat. Wonder if it would worth it to pick up a classic mod70 CRF good ole 30-06. With all the recent news of a shutdown and all.

RE: Wonder if one should pick up a mod70
Yeah--- I've been wondering the same thing. Do you think the higher the serial number the better? This kind of goes against what I've usually always looked for, but this is a different circumstance.
Thought about this and think I will pass. Its a different situation than the Auto5. An Auto5 is a browning product, where the new mod70 is really a US Repeating arms, not really a "winchester" product.
If you like mod70 and want one for yourself I'd say YES...you can always sell the thing later. But if you thinking along the lines of a "closet investment" I'd say no. Its hard to say what their value will be in 5-10 years...but I would hate to have a perfectly good gun that I can't shoot in my closet. Give me nightmares.

If I were to buy a model 70, it would be another pre '64 of early 50's vintage. The current crop of Model 70's don't do anything for me. Then again, not much else does either.
They have jacked the prices up around here to the point that it may take years just to be worth the current cost. However I don't think you would ever loose any money on one either. I may look at them again. If I buy one, I may be out living with the dog though.
i thought the plant was shutting down around march/april , so they should still be producing until about that time , right ?? so why are the so hard to get now , the wholesalers should still be getting shipments in then , shouldn't they ???
They are doing the same thing the oil companies did, tighten the supply and drive the price up. They have them in their back rooms waiting for the price to spike.
