Default savage customer service?

Hey guys, I bought a savage 110 package deal from the local hardware store. I had the scope, rings and bases taken off to be replaced by leupold setup. The back drill hole or tap(i think thats what its called) in the receiver was drilled wrong in the factory because the old screw was really hard to get out and the new screw will not thread in straight or screw all the way in without force. All the other taps are perfect. If this is sent back to savage will they send me a new gun or try to redrill. I am afraid if they try to redrill it will weaken the threads. The owner of the hardware store is giving me a hard time about sending it back. Should I just not worry about it?

Once you buy from a dealer, it is between you and the manufacturer. They will probably drill the hole out, and tap it again for a slightly larger screw. You could just take it to a smith and have him do it for what you will probably pay in shipping. Good luck

Probably just need to retap the hole. A tap is a tool used to cut threads, it's the threads that are bunged up on your rifle. Don't use that screw again, it's threads are most likely bad also.

I would just take it to a good gunsmith and have them retap. However if you decide to send it back Savage will either send you a new rifle or fixe the issue like the others have indicated.

My brother-inlaw has a Savage. He decided to shoot some hot loads (don't ask me why, cause I would never do that). Well he ended up breaking the bolt. He sent it back to Savage and they sent him a new rifle no questions asked.

I would definatly recommend taking it to a gunsmith, especially if you have no experience with tapping. Im not sure but the screw holes in your gun may be an uncommon thread size.....say a 6-40. If that is the case, you will have a hard time finding a tap that size. I have tried to repair scope mounts before, to no avail. I work in a machine shop and using a thread guage could not find the correct tap to fit scope mounts even in our catalogs.

I think I'd first contact Savage to describe the problem and see if they will help you out. Otherwise, I'd take it to a competent gunsmith.

Brownells sells all sorts of taps and screws for this type thing if you want to try and do it yourself. The scope mount screw holes were buggered up on my pre - 64 Winchester model 70 so I wentto Brownell's website andbought an oversized tap to clean up the threads and slightly oversized screwsto fit. Solvedmy problem.

95% of the base screws on rifles are going to be 6X48 or 6X40; which any gunsmith should have laying around by the dozen. Also would like to second the recommendation to throw away the screw you tried to force into the bad hole. Re-tap hole and a new screw . . . you should be good to go.

Duckdog,

You did good...

The best bet is to get the time of their lunch hour and call right when they return...that way you will not be behind a line of calls..

you guys got me thinkin, now that I know you can buy the taps for these oddball sizes. It might be worth looking into, heck I could probably make a few bucks just from the guys at work that always bugger up their scopes and stuff.
