Default 300wsm vs 300 win mag vs 300 wby mag?

is the 300 felt recoil from the 300 wsm really that much less than either of the other 2? i have read that the felt recoil of the 300 wsm is more along the lines of 270/30-06. can this be right? also is the felt recoil from the 300 wby mag the least /most/same as the other 2?

In guns of the same weight, the 300 WSM has a bit less recoil but not much less. Several friends of mine have them and they don't enjoy shooting them much. Recoil however is more bothersome to some than to others but most 300 WSM rifles are pretty light so don't expect much of a break in that area. They kick far to much for me to enjoy, I can take a shot or two to check Zero and a few shots in the field don't bother me. However, no way in He#* I would take a 300 out to the range for a day of enjoyable shooting. There are a lot of young tough guys out there who enjoy being kicked around like I used to. But no more.

When you consider that the 300wsm rifles are usually lighter than the other two,the 300wsms provide just as much or more recoil than the 300winmag,but less than the 300wby.

Depends on the weight of the gun, the stock design, recoil pad installed, and a few other things.

My 300WSM I built a couple years ago hurts less than my .270 Winchester. But the 300 has a stock I built to fit me, it weighs in at about 9 pounds and has a decelerator pad installed. My .270 Winchester has the original stock on it (which is too short for me), weighs about the same but has a plastic but plate on it.

When the WSM's first came out they were all chambered in light quick handling "mountain" type rifles that weighed about 6 pounds. Now there are more and more "standard" weight and "heavy" weight rifles that are chambered for the 300 wsm that will weigh within a couple ounces of a rifle chambered for the 300 Win mag. So yes if you compare the same rifle the WSM will kick less.

I should probably post this as a new thread but since it is a variation of the same topic so I'll ask it here. How do you feel the recoil of a lightweight mountain rifle in .300 WSM compares to a 12 ga. deer slug out of a pump gun like a Rem. 870?

Just from the pure recoil energy from the charts, The 12 GA. 3 inch 1oz load @1280 fpsgives 52 lb of recoil energy. The 300 WSM with a 180 grain bullet gives 23.8 lbs.

The 270's
270 Win. 150 gr. @ 2900 = 17 lb
270 WSM 150 grain @ 3000 fps= 18.9
270 Weatherby 150 Gr @ 3000 fps 17.8

From the Hawks charts. It would give a good comparison although all the things mentioned by Big Bulls would enter in as well. He is a smart guy. Merry Xmas all.

The rifles make will be the major factor in the amount of recoil. The 300's produce more recoil than other guns but there are some rifles out there that will stomp the livin h*** out of you. Why anyone would want a mag in a feather weight rifle is beyond me.
