Default I decided which Savage

I ordered the Savage SS Varmit, Synthetic stocked 270 WSM today. It has a 26 inch heavy barrel and weighs 8.75 lbs without a scope. the 26 inch barrel should give it good performance as most of the stats in my manuals just show a 24 inch barrel. This will be a stand rifle and not a carry rifle. For carry I have a 308 A-Bolt lightweight composite stalker. Its a nice gun to carry but even in 308 it has a healthy recoil to it.

Now I will have to shop for dies and components which was the only down side of this caliber. I had considered the 308 Varmit or Police model which I already have reloading stuff for. However in the end, the long range potential of the 270 WSM won out. The 308 would have handled it loaded to the max because for me a long range shot where I hunt mulies is 300-325 yards. Longer shots are possible but 300-325 is about my own personal Max range. The 270 WSM will do that at an idle.

I am guessing about three weeks until it gets here. What are your thoughts on bullets? I am thinking of trying the 140 grain Nosler BT, or 130 grain Partition. I probably won't buy any factory fodder but if I do, it would be the Ballistic Silvertip.

I have a Aetec 3.8x12 lighted rectical scope on the shelf as well as a Scheels outfitter 4.5x14x42 It is the Hunter model with sun shade. I also have a 3x9 Leupold Rifleman on the shelf. I have a M-8 scope as well but its just a straight 4X.

I ordered 100 brass and a die set form Cabelas tonight. I see that Federal makes the 150 Fusion load for the 270 WSM. I really liked the 130 grain Fusion for the 270 Win. Midway has a decent price on the ammo. Federal also loads the 130 grain Triple Shok for the 270 WSM

Maybe so, My wife could retire though. We are getting into the seldom shooting time of the year up here. The temps won't get above 25 much now and the wind just don't quit. Its typical today. Eight degrees 25 MPH wind from the NW. About zero right now.

James - I loaded for the 270WSM this fall for my buddies Weatherby Vanguard and here is the results I had.

1 - For some reason the cases did not want to slide in and out of the shellholders very easy. To fix this problem I took my dremel and just ever so slightly polished the lips on either side where the case slides in. Problem fixed.

2 - On my RCBS powder thrower neither of my 2 necks (screw into bottom of thrower) would fit right over that sharp shoulder on the case. My funnel also had the same problem, and you would have to push it over the case and be careful when you pulled it off, so as not to have powder flying everywhere.

3 - His Vanguard really liked the Nosler 140gr AccuBonds. With I believe RL-19. If you'd like the load info I can get that for you as well.

Hope this helped ya out, enjoy your new rifle!

Sounds like a great combination. Currently, I don't reload but I may pick it up in the near future just to make shooting a little more cost effective. So far, my Savage hasnot been real picky as to which load it prefers. Some have been more accurate than others but all were good enough for deer hunting. So far I have shot Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips in both 130 and 150 grain, Federal Power Shok in 130 grain and Federal 140 grain Accu Bond. I'm going to try some Fusion ammo in a few weeks...I read that a 130 grain would be offered for the 270 wsm but so far, all I have seen is the 150 grain loadings.

Midway only shows the 150 grain Fusion. That may be a good weight in the WSM. I will be watching for the 130 as well. Can't wait to try it out. Rammer I would like that load when you have it handy. Thanks. I will checl around and see if they make a powder funnel for the WSM's
