O.k. I've officially settled in on wanting a .338. I'll have to save a few months only 2 problems. 1) who makes .338 rifles (the only manufacturer I have found is Weatherby) do you guys know any rifle models I should look at to make a selection. 2) is ammo redialy avalible for the .338 or is it one of those hard to find calibers?

I was just wondering which .338 you"™re looking for ? The .338 Win Mag is very common cartridge with lots of options on rifles, but is it something else?
.338 win Mag is what I'm gettin' a hunkerin' for but I'm having trouble finding shops around where I live that sells them. The Bass Pro here doesn't go heavier than a 30 - 06 and the other shops havent had much demand for them since the .300 has come out (or so I've been told).

The best bang for your buck in 338 is probably a ruger M77. If you don't mind spending a little more the browning abolt is another good one especially with the boss. The winchester classic is another good one. Ammo is readily available buta little more spendy than the 06 or 300 winnie. Federal premium line is probably the best out there.
If you can't find a shop that stocks them on a regualr basis then just handle the 300 Win mags and find one that you like. When you do find one that fits you well and is in your budget have the shop order the same rifle in 338 Win mag.
Pretty much every manufacturer chambers the .338 Win mag.
Remington chambers it in the XCR. Surprising that it's only available in this single model.
Winchester chambers it in several model 70's.
Ruger chambers it in three different rifles.
Sako and Tikka both chamber rifles for it.
Browning chambers it in several A-bolts and BAR safari.

They are very common as is the ammo. I had two in the Savage rifle. Both were good shooters. I also had one in the Ruger. I don't care for the caliber nearly as much as the 300 Mag. But they are out there.

RE: .338
Have you checked the used racks at the gun stores? It is fairly common to find a .338 in our neck of the woods (PA), residing in the used/trades section. Could save you a bunch. Just a thought-----
