Default .22-250

sorry, I'm old school, as in the only guns I've ever heard of are 3006, 3030, 7mm and 300mm. What is a .22-250? whats is mainly used for? Deer? Is is a .22 just alittle bigger?

Well a 22-250 uses a 223 cal bullit and is bigger(has morecartridge capaciety) than a 223 rem. In the state that I am in you can use a 22-250 for dear, however it is mostly used for varmiants.

hmm, is it powerful? I Know you said you could deer hunt with it. So it would be compared to a .223.

It is a centerfire, .22 caliber varmint cartridge. It is a 250 Savage necked down. Great for coyotes, ground hogs, prairie dogs, ect. It was a wildcat cartridge for several years, and Remington made it commercially available in 1965.

Yes It is fairly powerfull for a bullet of it's size, however 19 out of 20 times or better I would not use it to shoot a deer. There are more beefy rounds to use that perform alittle bit better.

In that picture from left to right is a .223 22-250 220sift and 22X64

Can if be used for deer? Yes but nearly all factory ammunition is loaded with varment bullets. DO NOT USE VARMENT BULLETS!!!!! There are a few with big game bullets. Federal loads some with 55gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws and Winchester loads some 64gr. Factory guns wont shoot the 64gr very well. Handload for it or find those Federal loads...stick with head shots. The .243 is a much much much better deer catridge and can perform the duties of a 22-250 equally well. I'd look into that round if you're wanting a flat shooting, low recoil deer gun.

the 22-250 is a necked down 250 savage that uses a .224 diameter bullet and is mainly used for varmint. you could hunt deer with it but it is rather small when shootin an animal the size of a deer.

utm the 22/250 is NOT legal for deer here in TN. BUT I wouldn't let that stop me!!! I have used my Savage 22/250 with 55Trophy Bonded Federals and they are MURDEROUS on does for neck shots "in a county near you". In fact I have never even heard of a TWRA officer even ASKING about a deerhunters rifle. Sure if you were on a WMA or something you obviously wouldn't want to do it. But if you are on private land I think it is a moot point. I have also heard great things about the 64grn Winchester Power Points at those velocities as well. But you must stick with a 1 in 12" twist (like my Savage) to stabilize it. Most 250s offered today come with 1 in 14s so you gotta stay under 55 grns or so.

Good luck,
RA

ps
If you don't have the patience to wait for a clean neckshot and might be tempted by a broadside "boiler room" shot then yes stick with a .243 or larger!

If you are "old school" then you surely have heard of the 250-3000, also called the 250 Savage. The 22-250 is simply this case necked down to accept a .224" bullet.

When loaded with the lighter, more explosive bullets it is an excelent long range varmint/ predator rifle. If loaded with the controled expnasion bullets like the trophy bonded bear claw, Nosler partition, or Barnes X bullets it can also serve well as a medium range deer rifle.
