Default .44 mag?

I am looking at purchasing a revolver either a taurus or s & w I want it to shoot for fun but also if I ever want to carry a side arm I want something big enough to handle the job. I understand you can shoot .44 specials for lighter recoil when at the range. How is the .44 mag to shoot? I have shot a .357 and didn't think it was bad at all. Thanks? Also who make ammo for the .44 special?

Forget the Taurus, there ok for the money but you'll be better off with the S/W or Ruger super redhawk. The .44 is not that bad to shoot. You can find .44 specal ammo just about anywere. How big is the job you need to handle?

You owe it to yourself, look at the Ruger! You won't look any further!

Mossy, go 7 1/2". Does everything the 9 1/2 does except make you regret getting such a long barrel!

I have a Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casull. It is every bit as good as any S&W revolver I have ever owned, and that list includes several .44 Magnums, both M29's and pre-M29's. Additionally the Taurus Raging Bull lockup system isstronger than an S&W Model 29. However, there is nothing wrong with an S&W .44 Mag. either.

The Rugers are beefy and accurate. But they are TOO big and ponderous for meif I have to climb any mountains at high altitude.

An advantage the Taurus Raging Bull type revolvers have is their muzzle compensator and shock-absorbing grips-these features make a .454 feel like a .44 Magnum in other revolvers-pleasant to shoot! In addition, you can shoot all .45 Colt ammo in a .454, just as you can shoot .44 Special ammo in a .44 Mag.

Let me state that the .44 Magnum using full-power 240 grain or heavier bullet ammo has about TWICE the recoil of a .357 Magnum! However, in a Ruger Redhawk, there's so much bulk and weight the recoil of the .44 Mag. is tamed considerably. So if you don't mind dragging that big chunk of steel around in the woods, it is a good choice!
