My grandfather gave my brother a .308 win. on a mauser action. The old barrel got bent a few years ago (don't ask how, pretty stupid) and finally got a new barrel on it. It has been shot about 60 times so far. We have been shooting 180gr factory loads of different brands and can't get it to group at all, about 7" or 8" at 100 yards. I have heard that 308 sometimes doesn't shoot the 180 and up weight bullets well. I can't figure this gun out. We are going to try 150gr bullets tomorow and hope it works. If anyone has ever experienced this before your help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought about that earlier but was hoping that a compitent gunsmith wouldn't rebarrel a distorted action, but you never know. The bolt does lock up good and tight so I hope that's not it.

As a rule, .308's, even those with the original rifling twist of 1/12", will shoot all .308 bullets, up to and including the 220 grain round-noses, with much better accuracy than you are getting. How did this rifle shoot before it got damaged? What kind of a new barrel dopes it have? What is the twist in the new barrel?
Keep yore powder dry!!

BIGBULLS,
FROM A SMITHING STAND POINT YOU SHOULD CHECK THE CROWN OF THE MUZZLE, PLUS PROPER WOOD TO METAL FIT VIA ACTION AND STOCK I WOULD ALSO FLOAT THE BARREL.AGAIN AS PRE-MENTIONED CHECK SCOPE, BASE, RINGS, STOCK SCREWS.
