Default IS it worth it?

Is worth it for me to switch from a 30-06 to a 300wsm.I hunt in Upstate New York which is white tail country.I rarely get shot over 200 yards there mostly 35-150 yards. The only reason that i wanted to switch was because i wanted more power. But do i need the extra power?

Probably not. Check out the trajectory and the energy of the different rounds. Here is a website that someone pointed me too that has offered some insight.

I think the main advantage would be the ability to shoot heavier bullets. The disadvantages would be increased cost of ammo, decreased ammo capacity, a slight increase in felt recoil.

Shot placement is the key to success with ALL calibers, and that means PRACTICE. Changing toa magnum of any kind is not going to contribute to your hunting success.
In a word, hellno! The '06 is plenty adequate for any use you can think of in NY!

I agree! I didn'tneed a "magnum" to harvest this buck the other day at near 200 yards, and you don't either.

I do agree with the others that you do not need more power.

If you want more power? You could look at several other rounds beside the 300-wsm. IMHO the 300-wsm does not offer enough of a increase in power over the 30-06, to offsetthe added cost.

I think you should at least look at a few calibers. I recommend looking at 350-Remington mag, 35-Whelen, 338-06, 444-marlin, 300-R.U.M., 338-R.U.M. & Dare I say the 375-R.U.M. You just never know, you might fall in love with mid-bore magnums? I know I sure have.
I used my 375-R.U.M. all rifle season in Montana. I took 1-cow elk & 4-deer. Did I need that much power? HECK NO. I just wanted to hunt with a hard hitting magnum. One season of hunting with it was not enough. I will be using my 375 next year.

I don't see that it would help you to switch. the 06 is great and easy to shoot out to 250 yards. Still, why not have both, get good with both and yu can bring whichever gun strikes your fancy! More is better
