The recoil is more on the 300 WSM if you are shooting the heavier bullets. Expect the same recoil from the 300 WSM as generated by the 300 Win Mag. Regardless of what Winchester says, if you push a 180 grain bullet from both the 300 Win Mag and the 300 WSM, you are going to get very simular recoil. I guess that guy Newton had something to do with that.

It's a 30 caliber magnum. Of course it is a good deer rifle. It is also a great elk, moose, bear, sheep, etc... etc... rifle. It's about ten times more gun that anyone would need for deer hunting but hey, I'm gonna deer hunt with my 338 ultra mag just to practice with it and for poops and giggles.

i bought a model 70 winchester in 300 wsm and love it! the recoil is not bad with the pad that comes on the model 70. i put a box of shells through it from a bench with no problems! my 270 has more felt recoil. and all 3 deer that were shot with it this year went down fast. i was using federal fusion 165 gr ammo.

I've owned one for four deer seasons now. I tell people it kicks like a mule in my Savage 16FXP3, much more then a 12 guage which I can shoot all day - even after the addition of a Pachmyer recoil pad.

As for it's effect on deer. Of the four I've taken, only one has run after being hit, then only about 40 yds.

I've used 150gr. Ballistic Silver Tips, 180gr Power Points, and 165gr Fusion ammunition. All three have done well, although the deer that ran after being hit was shot using the 165gr Fusions.

I have a "custom" Encore in 300WSM and have killed SEVERAL deer, hogs, and coyotes out to 300 yards. I have used 150 gr BST's on all game so far and with great results, but I am considering a bullet change to fail safe or accubonds. My gun does not recoil as bad as my 270, BUT it has a 26"full bull barrel and weighs about 12 lbs. My 11 year old can shoot it comfortably in an extended range session and has killed 2 deer and a hog with it. It has been a great caliber for me.
