Default HORNADY TECH.

I CALLED HORNADY TECH. AND ASKED HOW MUCH FPS I WOULD LOOSE WITH MY 257 WBY. VANGUARD SS WITH A 24 INCH BARREL COMPARED TO A 257 WBY. WITH A 26 INCH BARREL AND THE HORNADY TECH. STATED 25 FPS EVERY 50 YDS. HE STATED A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THEY WILL LOOSE MUCH MOORE WHICH IS NOT THE CASE. JUST SOME INFO!

I think he meant 25-50 fps per inch of barrel.

Not possible. No bullet has a ballistic co-efficient high enough to lose only 25fps every 50 yards.

I cut a .257 Wby barrel from 26" to 24" about five years back. The velocity loss was right at 100 fps with 100 grain Hornady Interlock bullets and H-4831. BTW - I was not in favor of this modification, but the customer is always right . The customer also did not own a chronograph andwas subsequently very happy with the performance of the shorter handier rifle.

Coincidently that is exactly thevelocity differencethat I suggested in anotherthread about the 257wby.

I guess I missed that thread. Just went back and looked it up. Interesting . . . . BTW -there are some bullets that loose less than 50 fps per 100 yards travelled. The .300 Whisper, shooting a 240 Sierra Matchking at 1100 fps, loses only about 30 fps every 100 yards. Amazing what happens when a bullet with a BC of around .700 gets below the speed of sound . . .

That is interesting, but wewere talking the 257wby.Can you think of a single bullet driven out of a 257wby that only loses 50fpsin the first 100 yards?
