Ruger is the only one that makes it in stainless synthetic. They also offer it in laminated stainless and walnut blued.

Remington offers the .280 in their walnut blued mountain rifle.

AS far as rechambering goes not much you can do other than do a barrel swap on a standard action. The 7mm Rem mag is too big and the 7mm-08 is too short an action.

While I was shopping for my STW this spring, I saw quite a few used Rem. 700 Stainless Syn. in .280 on some of the sites I was frequenting. I always wanted one myself, and may hunt for one next year. Keep tabs on auctionarms.com, there's a Ruger on there right now, andgunsamerica.com. Sometimes there are guys selling new ones still in the box, just be patient and persistant, you'll find one. There are a couple of other sites I shopped on, when I think of them, I'll post them.

Gunbroker.com also. Just do a search for .280 on the sites and it will show what rifles are available. You may luck out and find a new one that nobody ever fired.

Bird,
Here is what you do,buy the ruger S/S have the barrel taken off,buy a 24 in Lija barrel from Mid-way and have it put on.
There you are done!
If that don't float your boat have one made for you, from anyone of the top custom gun makers inthe good Ole' US.

Go see your local Gunsmith. The easiest thing to do is look on sites like gunbroker, auctionarms, & gunsamerica. The Remington 700 stainless was produced for awhile in 280 & it has a 24" barrel. This is the only stainless model I know of that came with a 24" barrel. On the used market you will be able to find Remington's, Winchester's, Rugers, Weatherby's, & etc. At one time or another just about everyone has chambered the 280.

The other option would be to buy a gun that you like in any standard long action caliber such as the 270 Win. or 30-06 & have your local Gunsmith order a new barrel for you and chamber it in 280.

I did this several years ago because I wanted one with a 26" barrel for hunting from an elevated blind. I had an old RemingtonADL 270 that I had shot the barrel out on. I replaced it with a Match grade barrel with a heavier contour. Generally speaking a good smith can do this type of work for the cost of the barrel and maybe another $100 in my neck of the woods. Unless your smith doesn't have a chamber reamer in 280 then it will include the cost of the chamber reamer.

find yourself a 700 BDL Stainless Synthetic (or whatever you want for a gun in stainless / synthetic) and have it rebarrelled... you can get out of it fairly reasonably if you get a Douglas Pre-Threaded, Chambered and Crowned SS tube (bout $250 in SS)... chambered in pretty much whatever you want... for the extra money i'd go XX grade hand lapped... all the gunsmith has to do is bump the shoulder back on the barrel in the lathe and maybe face the end of the barrel just to clean it up, until it goes together and a headspace gauge fits... re-beadblast it and put it together... i'd go for having the action bedded when you do this.. doesn't hurt and often helps...

but on the other hand.. while the gun is apart it is all to easy to get carried away on making sure everything is true and that can add cost quickly in labor...

you can rent chamber reamers a lot cheaper than having to buy one... www.reamerrentals.com
