I am torn.. I am looking at a new rifle.. I either want a Rem 740 Syn. 30.06 or a 700 Syn 270
I shoot all day at work (1187 12gauge ext mag ) I have a Rem auto 30.06 now, don't know much about it since my father in law gave it to my wife ( I use it mostly) I think it is a 1100, it is old, has the bullet bottom in it by the trigger (make sense?) It is a great gun, but I want one of my OWN.
I don't want to spend too much more then 400 for the rifle, I will prob pick up a Swift scope to go with it
sorry if my post makes little sense, I just found this board (thx to www.snopes.com and the big ol' bear) I am working a double and I have been reading this board all day. Getting a little tired And sorry if this is yet another repeated "what do I want" thread, like I said, new here, first post
both calibers are fine for deer. if you hunt just deer i would go with the 270win.
as for the two remingtob rifles you said. i would stay away from the rem semi. i owned two and both turned into one shot rifles.
go with the rem 700 ADL synthetic in 270win.that should run you well under $400.00.
also look into savage rifles.. they are accurate and cheap. the pacakage deals come with scopes too. www.savagearms.com

thx for the welcome!
So, think I could get a new 700 bolt 270 syn for 350ish? NEW? man, I must have been looking in the wrong place! (well, I didn't really look at price lol)
Welcome to the board Kraw,I'll have to agree with Quilly. Stay away from the Remington semi auto rifles. There has been many negitive reports about them. The Rem700 ADL in .270 are available at Wal*Mart for around 369.00, The 270 Win is a fine deer cartridge.Check out the Ruger M-77's. They are available in many different configurations.

I like the Ruger too, my roomie swore by his, but man, they are what, 550? I don't want to pay quite that much
the Rem auto I have is a Model 7, I finally remembered. It has been a great gun. But for simplicity sake, I am going to do as you all recommend (and many others) and get a bolt.
so, how does the recoil of the bolt compare to say, my 870 express w/ 2 3/4" steel drylock?
thx for the input so far. I ahve been researching all day !
You should not have a problem with the recoil on the 270. I would say it will be equal to the 12 gauge. Never have heard that about Wlly World? The guns all come from the same factory---There should be no difference. Only suggestion I have is to consider getting a 30/06 instead of the 270. You already have an 06---so when you go hunting, you & your wife can use the same box of ammo-- no chance of getting the wrong ammo when you are on the deer stand. Just a thought, at my camp we all shoot 06 & all shoot 180 "Core-lokt" bullets that way if one guy forgets his shells at camp I can give him a couple of mine & he is in business.
I was at walmart last night and stopped by the sporting goods. there was an extremely knowledgable salesman there.. The 700 270 is $379. He told me a Ruger 270 was $429 but only had a few left.
Then, he had another one, I think it was a winchester? it was synt with a scope, it was $369.
I have a friend who works at a shop, he is going to look around and see what he has. He told me that right before deer season here, alot of people will trade in their more common guns (30-06, 308, 270 etc) for the bigger game guns, and I might find something for a great price
would it be worth the extra money to get the Ruger? I like the look and feel of it (like I said, my roomie had one and swore by it) or go with a tried and true Rem 700.
What about the Weatherby? the guy there said they are good rifles and for the money, hard to beat. I couldn't find the website/ifno on it. I think it was Vanguard? around 350ish?
I don't think you'll find any practical difference between the Ruger, Winchester, or Remington. Pick the one you like best and fits best within your budget.
As far as Wally World having second rate guns, that's a bunch of crap. The 700 ADL you buy at Walmart is the same 700 ADL you'll buy at the local sporting goods store, but probably priced cheaper.
