Is it just me or is this thing getting more and more popular? It seems to be well loved on this board, but of course we are all junkies. I wonder how it is doing with the average hunter/shooter. It seems to me that its getting more popular by the year though, everyone seems to offer it in a couple of models of rifles now. Rem has even started to act like it isnt ashamed of it by putting it in the SPS line and making a somewhat limited run of it in the adl synthetics.
I dunno if I am just noticing it since i got one or if they really are gaining steam, but this is a fine little gun. Seems weird that it took this long to really start catching on.
I've never really looked at the 7 mm-08 until I wanted something with a little less recoil. After doing some reading I decided to get one and like you said , they"™re getting more and more popular. But it"™s like anything else , until you have one you don"™t really notice them. I find it"™s a neat little cartridge, easy to reload, flat shooting with a good selection of bullets to reload. So what"™s not to like.
The 7mm-08 is my favorite cartidge hands down. I do not think it should be tallied about as it is -as being a good "beginner/womens round", not that it isn't. But I heard a Gander mountain employee tell a young couple who asked about seeing a gun in .243..."How about a 7mm-08 it is comparable to the .243..." Grrrr. It does have abit less recoil thana 308 but it is often chambered in lighter guns, so the recoil can be as stout as a 30-06 in a heavier gun. Wonderful ballistics, incredibly versatile, ac-rit, and easy to reload - make brass from 308 - plus I see more and more factory cartridges in 7mm-08 at gun shops. I'm hooked.
I've had one for several years and have taken more than a few deer with this fine round. I love the 7mm caliber anyway and have found that the 140gr Nosler BT is perfect medicine for deer. Wouldn't get rid of mine for anything.
7mm08 is agreat round any thing 7mm is great but every deer my wife and i have shoot with my 7mm08 went a hole 3ft to the ground some times i wonder why i shot my 7mmag!
I don"™t own one but I am very interested in the caliber, I own a .270 model 70 Classic Sporter and have been very happy and successful with it taking elk & deer with one shot in the ribs. 150 grain partitions and this year using 140 grain Barnes TSX.
Before buying my 270 I had the opinion that the 270, 30/06 and 308 were so similar (with the same bullet style and weight) that I would be happy with either caliber for my needs, all start out with muzzle velocities that are very, very close.. After shopping around locally, I ended up with a 270 Winchester. But now, I am including the 7mm-08 in that group of calibers that would be right for me. I have never needed a magnum and with my modest experience and the extensive experience of my hunting peers, I don"™t feel I need one, unless of course I go to Africa, but then I will get whopper of a magnum.
I must admit that I am just fascinated that the 08 casing can push the same projectile with almost the identical muzzle velocity as the /06 casing but with quite a bit less powder.
I am looking to buy another hunting rifle in the next few years and my caliber selection will definitely include the 7mm-08 and if I ordered a rifle from the factory, right now I would seriously consider the 708 as my first choice.
I became aware of the 7MM-08 years ago while in the steel silhouette shooting. The targets range from 200 meters to 500 meters. The 308 and 7MM-08 ruled this brand of target shooting. Both cartridges handled heavey enough bullets to topple the distant 500 meter Ram. The 308 was my choice mainly because of the 190 grain Hornady BTHP match bullet. However the 7MM-08 did a good job as well and had a little less recoil which added up after hundreds of rounds in practice and match shooting.
The soft recoil and effecient use of powder makes the 7MM-08 a much more pleasant caliber to shoot than the 7 MM- Mag and out to 300 yards it will do the same job with much less Blast and recoil than the bigger choices. Its just a great all around performer and YES I think word of its performance has spread and it is now getting the attention it deserves. I consider it in the same class as the 260, 270, 280 and 308. All fine cartridges of which I have owned them all.
Although I have built a bunch of these over the years for customers, never have owned one or even really fired one except for a test round in the bullet trap.Saw a Douglas 7MM blank on e-bay while back and wound up getting it for $65. My son has a 700 youth model .243, and drew an elk tag this year. I was planning on just having him use the .243, but this blank arrived Wednesday and by this morning it was a chambered rifle - ready to test fire. I plucked a load right out of the manual - 45.0 gr. of H-380 with a 150 grain Swift Scirocco - fired one for pressure test. Then shot a five shot group that measured .996". 2709 fps. Recoil seems hardly more than the .243, and noticably less than the .308. I may start using this rifle if the kid doesn't like it
