Default 325. WSM

I am looking to buy one of these for moose hunting next year and was wondering if anyone has tried one out yet? I am going to get it in a Model 70 or A-Bolt.

Thanks.

Few people have them yet. I hunted moose and most my buddies did also with .338 win mags and I would think this new round will be excellent for moose. Go for it.

It should be plenty of gun for moose as they have been taken with much smaller cartridges. I have not tried the 325 or any of the other WSSM or WSM's. Anything from the 6.5 Mauser and up will do for moose hunting.

Although Winchester is making only 180,200 and 220 grain bullets at this time, how long do you think it will be until Federal and other ammo makers will make them too?

Hey Terry, where do you hunt moose? I am in Napanee but will be heading to Ear Falls next Oct. Can't wait!! Only 50 weeks to go!

If the other wsm are indicators federal should be coming out with some 325wsm for next season but I guess that depends on the demand or sale of this latest wsm. However if your going to buy factory ammo and wantthis perfomance level than why not get 338 wm, you'll have more choices in ammo and rifles. IMO it is a great biggame choice. While certainly not needed for moose it will never let you down either.

I don't think that you could go wrong with either gun. I personally like the Winchesters better, but thats just me. I'm sure you will find just as many guys that like the A-Bolts.

Pick up RifleShooter Magazine, it just did an article on the 325 WSM that's an interesting read. Basically its a mid-range cartridge between any 30and the 338 caliber. I don't know if I agree 100% with the stats but the ballistics are impressive.

It will definitely do the job on a moose, I'm considering the caliber myself in a Savage, my other choices would be the A-Bolt or Tikka T3 (stainless synthetic for all the rifles mentioned).

Good luck with your choice

jigncraw,
I hunted moose for years in 9A west of Ignace. Always got tags and moose but just got tired of the drive. Last few years we have been hunting 16B and have done well up there also. Never di get to go this year due to uncontrollable circumstances so I really "NEED" to go to deer camp ( WMU 49, Dunchurch area ).

In making your rifle choice, you may want to take a look at Barrel length, there seems to be no consistancy, Browning is 23", Winchester 24", Savage 24" and Tikka 24 and 3/8".

I'm not an expert but the shorter barrel of the browning may not allow for complete powder burn.

Hopefully one of the ballistic experts can provide more insight.

In any case the moose wouldn't know the difference.
