Just to let you all know, this weekend after I got home from chasing antelope.I went to the gun store and bought one of those Stevens 200 bolt actions.I got the last one thay had in 300 win mag.
I got it home Sunday night and put a set of Weaver bases and rings on it and a old Sightron 4x scope.
I had my wife pick up a couple boxes of ammo for me yesterday,PMC 180 gr SP.I set up the bench out side the garage and bore sighted it,the fired 10 rounds, cleaning after every 3.Got the scope centered and moved the target out to 100 yds.I fired 3 shots, walked out to see where I was and I about $h!t,3 jagged holes all touching about 2 inches high.I then moved out to 200 yds,set up fired three shots, walked out and to say the least I'm impressed a measured group of .75 inches. This is just off bench, with gun laying over a couple pillows and me holding it tight.
This gun is not pretty, and could use a good recoil pad but man o man this is a shooter.
I would recomend it to anyone.
not bad for 259.99

All of the Gun Rags have given it a good review. The best one I read said that its just what they have come to expect from Savage. However its nice to see that someone is not trying to retire off every unit it sells. I have been thinking of trying one but I have no idea what caliber I would pick up. Do you know what all calibers it comes in? Glad you got a tack driver.
BBJ I have praised that gun several times on here. We have had one (270) at work for about a month now and I can't give it away. Despite my best efforts to convince most "clueless" otherwise, when a newbie or budget hunter comes in and asks about entry level guns it is the first one I pull off the rack. They of course typically end up with the 710s or 70/Simmons combos that I already have. I just can't convince them that for about the same money I can sell them a 200 with a ProStaff Nikon that is a MUCH better rig and being a Savage it will just flat out SHOOT the lights out of anything else.
I think the fugly appearance and the "cheap" feel of the stock is what turns most off. I know better, I have two Savages and wouldn't hesitate owning a 200 ifI needed another synthetic hunting gun (ok, so I really would rather have an Accu-trigger!)
BBJ it sounds like you gotta keeper that is a REAL shooter!

My father in law just got one in .243 and mounted a Leupold vx-1 3-9x40 on it and is getting groups under 1 inch at 100 yds with handloads. The trigger was pretty bad, breaking at around 8 lbs on a digital scale, but he worked on it and got it down to just over 3 lbs, feels much better now. They say you cant adjust the trigger on them, but hes pretty good with rifles and triggers, and got his adjusted much lower than it was. It is exactly what he was lookig for, cheap, light, and accurate, something he can leave in the truck all the time for around the farm, watch out coyotes!
