I was browsing the site and looked at the weight on this rifle, 8 POUNDS! Now I know that this includes a 26" bbl, but nonetheless, can that weight be lightened? Maybe have the barrel cut and recrowned to 22" and have an inch or an inch and a half cut from the butt of the stock (I am quite a small framed guy and like the feel of a shorter length of pull) and have the forend shorted and thinned. Do you think this would shave a pound or two off that weight? Thanks for the info guys.

Pryral, when you compare a Ruger 1B to Remington 700 BDL (both .270s)you'll find the Remington is a 1/4-inch longer and 5/8s of a pound lighter than the Ruger 1B. The Ruger 1B has a 26-inch barrel compared to a Rem 700's 22-inch barrel due to the bolt action of the Rem 700 takes up so much space.
If you need a short pull rifle in single shot try the H&R Handi Rifle (barrels made by Ruger, firearm assembled by New England Firearms @$200). The Handi Rifle is 7lbs, 38-inches overall w/22-inch barrel w/13.5-inch pull.
Cutting up a Ruger 1B is an awful thing to contemplate.

I think its fine to DOWNSIZE a #1, IF and ONLY IF You have it dont by someone who makes it look at least as good as the way it looks now. It MUST be well done. if you go cheap, i say go handi instead

Why is it a terible thing to contemplate? You do the same thing to any other rifle you purchase. Take a Mod 70 or 700, if you don't like the way its bedded, you inlet more or glass it. If you think the stock feels too big, you sand it down and refinish it. Don't like the length of the bbl, have it cut down to make it handle better. It is nothing more than custom gun work to make yourself happier. I just want to know if my proposal if possible. Besides, the 1a doesn't offer the caliber I like!

Well Pyral, being that the 1A is chambered in 270,7x57 and 30-06 you can have it rechambered to any caliber you want . it would be a simple rechambering and extractor job . My personal favorite is the 1-S but have not run across any but if I do it's my next single shot . I own a 1b in 280 now.

Alright, both the 1a and the 1b have a MSRP of $850 on the website. Now add a barrel job to the 1a versus glassing, slimming the stock, and having the barrel cut down 4 inches. Which do you think is more economical?
