Default 12 ga. vs 30.06 recoil ??

What do you feel has more felt recoil 30.06 or 12 ga. Shooting 1oz. slugs with the shotgun, and around 165.gr. with the .30-06.(non autos.)

I would suspect the 12 ga. has a little more recoil in terms of foot pounds, but it's not as sharp as the recoil impusle of the 30-06. I would agree with Vapordog - about the same "ouch" level.

For me the 30-06 kicks harder. However it really depends on the specific rifle. I have fired 5 or 6 different brands of ammo thru my slug gun so far and I don't feel any kick all that bad. I just got done shooting some brenneke's that weigh 600 grns out of a 3 inch magnum shell. I didn't think it was bad at all really. Of course my gun weighs over 10 lbs and has a recoil pad on it.

I to feel the high powered rifles seem to have a sharper kick to them. However if you shoot a 3 inch slug out of a light shotgun it will kick pretty hard as well. I think weight and stock design play a huge role in felt recoil.

Well you gotta tell us what shells you want to shoot out of the 12 ga.

If you are talking about 3/4 ounce target loads then the 30-06 kicks a lot more than a 12 ga.

If, on the other hand, you are talking about a 3.5 inch 2 ounce maximum turkey load then the 30-06 compares about like a .22 rim fire. This load is down right painful to shoot. Even once.

A 30-06 firing a 180 grain bullet is going to have about 20 foot pounds of free recoiling energy out of an 8 pound rifle. A 12 ga shooting the above turkey load is going to have about 60 foot pounds of free recoiling energy. This is equivalent to a 416 Rigby. So you tell me which one kicks harder.

I shoot 2 1/4oz turkeyloadsandit will kick harder than a 300 Ultra Mag. For kicks I put the shell specs and gun weight (870 Pump3.5inch mag)into a recoil calculator and came up with 57 lbs of recoil, way higher than my 06 at 28 LBS. I also checked the recoil of slugs and found them to be higher in recoil energy than an 06.

I have a Remington 870 Express12 ga.that has a 23 inchfully rifled barrel withcantilever scope mount set up. When shooting Winchester's 2 3/4"Partition Gold SabotSlugs orRemington's 2 3/4"Premier Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded Sabot Slugs the recoilis pretty stout.Therecoil feelsmore then my 444Marlin anddefinitely more then my Remington model 7600 Carbine in 30-06 did whenshooting Remington's 150 gr.Core-Lokt ammo, which is the only ammo I ever fired in it. Ishot my friends Remington 11-87turkey gun. I fired two 3 1/2" turkey loadsthrough it and will never shoot a 3 1/2" 12 ga. load of any kind ever again. It was just brutal!

I hunt in both a rifle and a shotgun area so I sight both guns in at the same time each year. Hands down the shotgun isway meaner than my 30-06. The only upside to the recoil of the 12 ga is it made my new 300WM feel very tame. I don't have any calculations, only shooting them back to back as a comparison.

tbonecpa, you're saying a 12 ga. (shooting slugs)recoils more then a 300 Win. Mag., is that correct? I've never shot a 300 Win. Mag. soI have no idea, butI always wanted to know how the recoil comparedto a 12 ga. thanks!
